Called By The Name Of The House

The sign above the shop had been repainted four times and never once changed.

Same name. Same letters. The second one always a shade too wide, because the first painter made it that way and every painter since copied the mistake rather than argue with the town about it.

The boy who swept the floor was fifteen and the third generation to sweep it. He knew the shop the way you know a room you were carried into as an infant. What he did not know, and what took him another eleven years to work out, was why some people's faces changed when they came through the door.

Some softened. An old woman would take his hand in both of hers and hold it a beat too long, and he never found out why. Others went flat. A man once looked at the sign, looked at him, put the thing he was holding back on the shelf and walked out without a word.

Nobody explained. There was a great-uncle, and there was something about the war, and there was a thing said at the market that a family two streets over has not forgotten, and none of it belonged to the boy with the broom. He was born into the weather of it, that is all. He inherited the whole climate of a story with none of the facts, and he learned to read a stranger's face for the temperature before he learned to work the till.

You know that arithmetic. Your surname might carry a father who left, or a father who stayed and should not have. It might carry a town's opinion, or a family everyone respects so much that you have spent your adult life being their surname with a person attached. Or it carries nothing anyone else can see, and that is worse, because then it is only you who hears the whole story every time somebody reads it back to you off a form.

And you cannot put it down. That is the part that gets missed. It is on every document you own. It is the name a nurse says at the top of an appointment. It is what the neighbor calls after you across the road. You did not write a word of the story and you carry the whole book.

So come and stand somewhere else for twenty minutes. There is a hill, and there is an old man, and there is a morning when a name got changed in the middle of a life.

The morning a man of ninety-nine walked back into camp

Here is the scene. An old man goes out from the tents alone and comes back different, and what is different is not his face and not his gait. It is what people have to call him.

He had been Abram, which is a good enough name, and it means what a father hopes when a son is small. Now God has sworn something over him, and the swearing came with a new word, and the new word has an extra breath in the middle of it.

Think about what that costs a man in a camp. Every servant has to be told. Every trader who comes through has to be corrected. His wife has to relearn her husband's name at ninety. And every single time somebody says it, out loud, in the ordinary business of the day, they are unknowingly saying the promise back to him. A hundred greetings a week, and each one a rehearsal of a thing he could not yet see anywhere in the world.

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.Genesis 17:5

Notice the tense in that sentence. Not I will make thee. I have made thee. The name landed on a man on the morning the promise was still entirely invisible, and it was fully his that morning, and nothing in the man's feelings that day was consulted about it.

You have a name spoken over you that arrived exactly like that, ahead of the evidence and ahead of your agreement. I am not putting a warm thought over your surname. Genesis 17:5 shows a name given at the front end of a promise rather than the back end of a performance, and the Holy Spirit works the same way inside you: He tells you whose you are while the rest of your life is still catching up.

A name given by a household, not chosen by a person

This is the part people miss about names in a covenant, and it is the whole engine of the thing.

You do not pick it. In an oath between two houses the greater name goes over the lesser one. The lesser house does not audition, or propose a name it likes, or work up to one. The name comes across the table, from the one who swore, and after that everything the lesser house does is done under it. That is why the name is a mercy and not a target. A target is something you are given to reach. A name is something you are given to live inside.

So you are not being handed a standard to climb toward tonight. Scripture never once puts a covenant name at the top of a ladder, and the Spirit of God is not standing over you with a checklist to see whether the name fits yet. He put it on you. The fit is His problem and He is not worried about it.

The word a city reached for

Now come forward a long way, to a busy trading city on a river, full of Greeks and Syrians and Jews and soldiers and everybody's gods.

Something is happening in that city that the city has no vocabulary for. A group of people are living in a way that keeps pointing at one Person who is not physically there. They share food. They take in the wrong sort of neighbor. They keep saying one Name in the market like it is the answer to a question nobody asked.

And the city, watching, reaches for a word, and the word it lands on is built out of the Name they keep saying: these are Christ's lot. Christ's household. Christ's people.

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.Acts 11:26

They did not choose that. It was said about them, from outside, by people counting them from a distance and getting it exactly right. The name described whose they were, and it stuck because it was accurate.

You have been named the same way. Acts 11:26 is not a piece of history that happened to somebody else's ancestors; the Holy Spirit takes that street and that word and He speaks it fresh over the chair you are in, and what He says about you is Christ's, and He is not asking whether you feel like it yet.
