The Card Somebody Gave You

This message is for somebody gave you a card at the time and it is the only evidence you have that any of it happened

The coat came out of the wardrobe in the second week of October, the way it did every year, smelling faintly of the last winter and of the cupboard.

Nadia put it on in the hall to see whether it still fitted, and put her hands in the pockets out of habit, and her right hand found the card.

She had forgotten it entirely. It had gone through two winters in that pocket, folded once and then unfolded and then folded again, and it had gone soft, the way paper does when it lives against a body. The corners were rounded off. The ink had bled through to the back so that the writing showed faintly on both sides.

She stood in the hall with her coat half on and read it.

Somebody had written eight words on it in blue biro, in careful handwriting, on an evening in a hired room with the heating turned up too high and the chairs in a rough circle. Nadia could remember the smell of that room. She could remember that a woman she had never met before and never saw again had held both her hands, and that something had gone through her, and that she had cried in a way she had not cried since she was a child, and that afterwards she had walked to her car in the cold with the whole world sounding different.

She had not felt it since.

Not once. That was the plain truth of it, and she had never said it out loud to anybody. Two winters. A hundred ordinary Sundays. Prayers said into a ceiling. And nothing, or nothing she could point at, and slowly the memory had thinned out until she was no longer sure how much of it she had built afterwards out of wanting it.

Which is why the card mattered so much and why she had never thrown it away. It was evidence. It was the one solid object in the whole business, the only thing in her house that had actually been there. And it was going soft in her pocket, and sooner or later it would go through the wash, and then what.

Maybe you have one too. A card, a receipt, a page torn out of a notebook, a photograph, a small thing somebody pressed into your hand at the time. And maybe it has become the only proof you have that any of it was real, and you have started to be afraid of losing it.

Put your coat down for a minute. Nobody has ever built the proof of this out of paper.

The Card Somebody Gave You

He hung it where He would be the one looking

The rain had stopped and the ground was drying and eight people came out of a boat into a world that had gone silent. God spoke a covenant over them, and then He did something a person can see from a garden.

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.Genesis 9:13

A bow in a cloud. Not a stone laid in a wall, not a mark cut into anyone's arm, not a document rolled up in a jar. Something enormous and public and completely out of human reach, hung in the sky where nobody could take it down, lose it, damage it or leave it in a coat.

And then, three verses on, comes the line that changes what the whole thing is for. God says that when the bow is in the cloud, He will look upon it and remember. Not: you will look at it and cheer up. He will look at it. The sign was hung facing Him.

You are held by something hanging on His side of the sky, and its condition this evening has nothing whatever to do with how much of that night you can still recall. I am not softening this to be kind. Genesis 9:13 has God putting the token up Himself, out of everybody's reach, and the Holy Spirit is the One taking that arc of light and setting it over a woman standing in a hallway with a soft card in her hand.

What a sign is actually for

Every covenant carried one: something standing, visible, outliving the day it was given. And a sign has a job, which is not to produce a feeling. It is to tell the truth when the feeling has gone quiet.

Listen to how God says it to a people who had been through generations of mixed weather.

Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.Ezekiel 20:12

That they might know. Not that they might feel it again. And look who is doing the setting apart in that sentence: the LORD that sanctify them, not the people who managed to hold on to the mood.

You have not lost your standing because you lost the feeling, and no such trade has ever been on offer. Ezekiel 20:12 puts the knowing on one side and the sanctifying firmly on God's, and the Spirit will not be talked into treating your dry Tuesday as evidence against a sign He hung Himself.

The people who never had a night like that

It is worth saying plainly, because somebody reading this is quietly certain they are on the outside of it: there are people inside this covenant who have never had a hired room, or a stranger's hands, or a walk to the car with the world sounding different. Some of them came in over years, on ordinary afternoons, with nothing to report and nobody to write them a card.

They are not further out. A covenant sign is not a receipt for an experience, and God has never once run a two-tier arrangement where the people with a good story get the real version.

Right now, as you read, the thing that makes you His is standing where it was put, and it is not being reviewed on the strength of your last six months. Scripture keeps hanging the sign on God's side and keeps saying it plainly, and His Spirit is the One turning that from a doctrine you would agree with into ground you can actually put weight on.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is a relief rather than a rebuke. You are not the keeper of this. The card in the coat was never the evidence, the night in the hired room was never the covenant, and the feeling you have been trying to get back was never what made you His. In the name of Jesus I am telling you what Ezekiel 20:12 already settled: God is the One who sets you apart, He hung the sign where He looks, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping it in front of Him through every one of those hundred ordinary Sundays.

Keep the card if you love it. It is a kind thing that a kind person wrote. It is simply not what is holding you.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is worked up. The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ, given the day the sign was hung and not the day you last felt something, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes such words carry rather than the warmth you say them with. Speak them once, and leave what you feel this week to Him, because that is His to give in His own way, and the naming is yours.

  1. Card gone soft in a coat pocket, you are not the evidence and you never were. Ezekiel 20:12 says God is the One who sets a people apart, so the proof of this was never made of paper that can go through a wash. In the name of Jesus I take my weight off you and put it back where it belongs.
  2. Suspicion that it never took, get off me. Genesis 9:13 has the bow put up in the cloud where God looks, so the keeping of this was never filed under my memory or my mood. I am set apart by somebody who has not forgotten a single day of it.
  3. Lord, You said You would look on the bow and remember, and the looking has always been Your work rather than mine. Your Spirit has been holding this steady through two winters of nothing much, and how much of it I feel this week is Yours to give. I am naming Your sign out loud today, in Your name, instead of hunting for a night I cannot get back.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
