The valley had gone the color of old brass by the time the animals were laid out. Two rows, opened and set facing each other, with a lane of trodden ground running down the middle, wide enough for two men walking shoulder to shoulder. That was how it was done in that country. The two binding themselves would walk that lane together, between the pieces, and whatever they said while they walked, neither of them could ever take back.
The old man had laid it out himself. Twice he drove the birds off with his sleeve, shouting until they lifted and circled and came back. Then he stood at the head of the lane and waited for the other party to arrive.
The sun dropped behind the ridge. Nothing came.
He waited longer, and the tiredness came up through his legs the way it does at the end of a day you have spent standing, and it took him, and he lay down in the dust at the head of that lane and slept like a man who had given up on being needed for anything.
Then the fire came.
It came low and moving, a smoking pot and a torch of open flame, and it went down that lane between the pieces on its own. The old man never woke. Nobody shook his shoulder. Nobody called him over to say a word or make a mark or agree to anything. The One binding Himself walked the whole lane alone, in the dark, over a sleeping man, and when it was finished, it was finished.
Now come back to your own evening.
There is a spike on the corner of your desk, the steel kind on a heavy base, and it is loaded. Delivery slips mostly, the carbonless sort in triplicate. You have been pushing them down onto that spike since March. You signed every single one. You signed the one for the pallet that came in with a corner staved in, because the driver was already climbing back into the cab. You signed the finance thing in the spring, where the man in the good coat tapped page four with a pen and said it was standard. You signed at the school gate, you signed for the boiler, you signed a card that went round the office for a man you had met twice.
And what did any of it hold?
Somewhere in the last few years you learned a quiet lesson and you have never once said it out loud: a name on a line is mostly a way of ending a conversation. It is how you get the driver back in the cab. It is how you get the man in the good coat to leave. So when somebody at church tells you God has made promises to you, you hear it standing right next to that spike, and the whole thing goes soft in your hands before it reaches your chest.
But the fire went down the lane alone. Nobody woke the old man. Nobody asked him for a line.

Two ways a thing gets made binding
There are two ways a thing gets made binding, and your whole working life has only ever shown you one of them.
The first is the slip. Your name goes on a line, and behind that line stands a company, a policy, a claims department, a person who may or may not still work there in a year. The slip is only ever as strong as whoever is holding the other end of it, which in your experience is not very strong at all. That is not cynicism. That is accuracy, and nobody ever gave you a reason to be anything else.
The second way is what happened in that valley, and it is a different species of thing altogether. There was no document. There was ground, and there was blood, and there was a lane walked in the dark, and the walking itself was the promise. What the walk said was this: let what happened to these animals happen to me before I go back on what I am telling you now. It was not filed anywhere. It was cut.
Here is what that means for you, and I want you to take it slowly. You are inside the second kind of thing, and you have never once been asked for the first. That is not my opinion dressed up warm. Galatians 3:15 says that even with an ordinary human oath, once it is confirmed nobody sets it aside and nobody adds a clause to it, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that plain sentence past your ears tonight and setting it down somewhere lower and warmer.
Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.Galatians 3:15
Read that again with the spike in view. No man adds to it. Not the man in the good coat. Not the department that changed its terms in a letter you never opened. Not you, on a bad night, with an amendment about how you would have to hold up your end better before any of it counted.
The man was asleep, and that is the point
Everything in you wants to find your own signature on this somewhere, because that is how everything else in your life got made real. You want to locate the moment you agreed, so you can check whether you agreed properly.
There is nothing to find. He was face down in the dust while the fire walked. The whole weight of it landed on the One who walked it, and the man who was promised everything contributed a night's sleep. This is the picture God chose to give first, before any of the rest of it, and He chose it on purpose so that nobody would ever be able to say the strength of the thing was in the person receiving it.
So take this as yours, right now, on a weeknight, with the slips still on the spike. You have not been kept in by your reliability, and you are not one bad month from being written out. Scripture puts you inside an oath sworn by God on His own name because there was nobody higher to swear by, and His Spirit is pressing that against the exact place in you that keeps waiting for the terms to change.
There are terms. Of course there are terms, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something soft. But look at where they sit. His part is the oath, and it is sworn, and it is finished. Your part is the response: to receive it, to walk with Him, to say yes to the One who already said it first. That is a real yes and it costs you a real life. It is just not the thing holding the covenant up.
Something has to change hands here, and it is not information.
You came in reading the promises of God the way you read page four: skimming for the clause that gets them out of it, because everything else in your life has had one. Tonight you are being handed something with no clause, and you get to stop reading like a man protecting himself.
Right now, as you read, you are being held by an oath you did not negotiate and cannot be argued out of. I am not making that up over you. It is written, it was cut in a dark valley over a sleeping man, sealed for good at a cross, and the Holy Spirit is in this room making it a fact about you rather than a fact about history. You are not a signature to God. You are a person He swore over.
And that changes what happens the next time you read one of His promises. It stops being a nice sentiment somebody printed on a card. It becomes a line in an oath that no man adds to and no man sets aside, which means it has your name in it whether or not you feel qualified to be holding it.
Declare this over yourself
You are not working this up. The right to speak like this was given to you in Christ, it belongs to you the way the oath belongs to the man who slept through it, and it is His authority, not yours, and His Spirit, not your volume, that makes a word like this land. What He does with it and when is His to decide, and you can leave the outcome there without loosening your grip on the word itself. So speak plainly, the way you would to a driver at the door.
- Spike of signed slips, you do not get to set the price of my name any longer. You are paper, and the thing I stand in was cut in a dark valley over a sleeping man. God swore by Himself because there was no one higher, and that oath was never waiting on my signature.
- Voice that says my word is only ink, get out of my mouth. I am a man God swore over, in the name of Jesus, and no clause was ever added to that. What I say now stands on what He said first.
- Father, You walked that lane alone and You have never once asked me to co-sign it. I am reading Your promises tonight as an oath and not as a sentiment, out loud, in this chair. You are the One holding this up, and I am letting go of the drawer.
