The Name Written In The Front Of The Bible

This message is for there is a name in the front of your grandmother Bible and you have no idea what stands behind the ink

Ada Rowe kept her lamp on the walnut table by the window, and in the March of her sixty-eighth year she trimmed the wick, uncapped the pen, and opened the family Bible to the page at the front where the printers had left the ruled lines empty.

She wrote slowly. She was not a fast writer and she was not trying to be. Her husband's name went on the first line with the year beside it, her own underneath his, then the children in the order they came, and the two who did not stay, and the grandchildren as far as she had them. Last, on the bottom line where the ruling ran out, she squeezed in the newest one, born in February, whom she had held exactly twice.

The ink took a long minute to dry in that cold room, and she did not close the book on it. She sat with her hands flat on the wood and waited, because a smudged name looks like a doubt, and she did not intend to leave a doubt on that page.

That same spring, in a front room in town with the curtains drawn against the light, a lawyer read a will out loud. Four pages. It had been sitting in his cabinet, sealed, for eleven years. In all that time nobody had been able to open it and nobody had been able to change one line of it, and that was not because the family were patient people. It was because a will does nothing at all while the one who wrote it is still breathing. Until then it is paper with intentions on it, and intentions are not property.

The day he died, the paper became law. The farm moved. The savings moved. The names on that page took hold of things they had not worked for and could not have bought, and no argument in that room could have unpicked a word of it, because the one whose death made it binding was not there to be argued with. The lawyer did not persuade anybody. He read.

Now go and find the Bible in your own house.

You know the one. Brown leather gone soft at the corners, a front page with ruled lines on it, handwriting in ink that has faded toward rust. One of those names belongs to a woman you may or may not remember, and every time you have looked at her careful hand on that page you have thought, in a vague and grateful way, that she was sentimental about her family.

She was not being sentimental. She was doing what people do when something has already been settled and they want the names on it kept straight.

Somebody wrote your name into something far older than that page, and did not use ink.

The Name Written In The Front Of The Bible

What a lawyer's front room is doing in the middle of the Bible

For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of him that made it.Hebrews 9:16

That is not a poem and it is not a flourish. That is a man writing about God who stops mid-argument to explain how a will works, because he knows every person reading him has stood in a room like that one with the curtains drawn. A document that hands over property does nothing while the one who wrote it is alive. He can change it on a Tuesday. He can throw it in the stove. The moment he dies it hardens, every name on it comes into possession, and the reason nobody can argue with it is that the only one who could have altered it has gone past altering anything.

Then he takes that ordinary, dusty, legal fact and lays it underneath everything God ever said to you.

So you are not holding a collection of encouraging sentiments from a God who means well. Your name sits inside something that hardened at a death, and it hardened long before you had a word for it. That is not my nice thought over your morning: Hebrews 9:16 puts the dying and the document in one sentence, and it is His Spirit, not my sentence, who takes an old legal fact and lands it on the actual house you woke up in today.

The night the fire walked alone

Long before any of that, a man stood in a field at the end of an afternoon with a heifer, a goat, a ram, a dove and a young pigeon, and he did the thing everyone in his world understood without being told. He killed them. He split the bodies. He laid the halves out in two rows on the ground with a path of bare earth running down the middle.

That path was the whole point. In that country, when two men bound themselves to each other in the most serious way available to human beings, they did not sign. They cut. They walked the aisle between the pieces together, and the walk said, without one word needing to be spoken: let what happened to these animals happen to me, if I fail you.

Then the sun went down on Abram and he could not stay awake. Something like dread and a great darkness came over him, and he went out flat on the ground beside the pieces with the ceremony unperformed.

And in the dark, alone, a smoking furnace and a burning lamp came down the path between the halves.

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.Genesis 15:17

Read it again slowly, because the whole thing is in it. The man who was to receive everything was unconscious. He did not walk. He did not swear. He did not so much as nod. God went down that path by Himself and carried both halves of the oath, His own and the man's, in one hand.

You were inside an oath before you were awake for it, and you are inside it in exactly the same way this morning, in the middle of an ordinary week with the washing on. Genesis 15:17 has a sleeping man and a moving fire in it, and the Spirit takes that field and that darkness and seats you down inside them as somebody who is held rather than somebody who is auditioning.

Cut, and never signed

A signature is a thing a person can withdraw. Two parties sign, each keeps a copy, and either one may walk away and leave the other holding paper. That is a contract, and it is not what happened in that field.

Blood is not in that field to be terrible. Blood is there because it is the one thing that cannot be put back. When people wanted to say this cannot be undone, and I am not coming back to renegotiate, they did not raise their voices. They cut, and the cutting was the sentence.

So you have a claim on God this week, and it is not a hopeful one. It is the kind of claim a court would recognize, and it was cut and never signed. The written word puts a death under the promise rather than a mood, and His Spirit is doing something better inside you than teaching you the difference: He is standing you on it.

Which frees you from the job you never had. You have never once been the guarantor of this, and the relief in that sentence is meant for you personally. Nowhere is it written that the promise leans on your steadiness or your good weeks. Hebrews 9:16 leans it on a death that has already happened, and the Holy Spirit does not come to ask you to hold up your end of something that was sworn with both ends in one hand.

Something is asked of you. Not to make it true, and not to keep it true. To answer it.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it happens in the chair you are sitting in.

You are not being asked to believe something new about God this morning. You are being told what you already stand inside. The oath was cut, the death has happened, the document has hardened, and your name went in before you could read: that is Hebrews 9:16 and Genesis 15:17 saying one thing in two centuries, and the Holy Spirit is not delivering that to you as history. He is delivering it as an address.

And now the part that is yours, because an oath that asked nothing of anybody would not be worth swearing. God's side is settled and He cannot revise it. Your side is the answer: to take the promise you have been reading for years as a warm sentiment and start handling it as the property it has been the whole time. Say yes to it out loud. Live in the house as an heir instead of a tenant.

Declare this over yourself

You do not speak these because you worked your way up to them. You speak them because your name went into an oath that was cut in Christ, and the standing that comes with it is yours before you feel one thing about it. Scripture puts the words in your mouth and the Holy Spirit puts the weight behind them, and what God does next with what you face is His to decide, in His own timing. That is not a weakness in these lines. It is the reason they are safe to say.

  1. Front page in the brown ink, you are not a keepsake and I am done reading you like one. You are the record of an oath that hardened at a death, and Scripture says a testament stands the moment the one who made it dies. I take possession of every promise I have been filing under sentiment, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame of never having understood it, you have no claim on my name and no place on that page. I was written in before I could read, and God does not admit late-comers to a will He has already sealed. I am an heir in my own family and not a guest at the table.
  3. Father, You put my name into an oath You cut Yourself while the man who was promised everything lay asleep in a field, and You have never once asked me to guarantee it. You are the God who carries both halves in one hand, and Your word does not soften into a sentiment because I misread it for thirty years. I am opening the front page today and reading it as the deed it is.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
