Read Like A Greeting Card

This message is for you read the promises of God the way you read a card somebody signed, warm and meant and binding on nobody

The drawer under the kettle has not opened cleanly since the eighties. You lift and pull at the same moment, or it does not come at all, and when it gives, everything inside slides forward in one soft avalanche.

Cards. Four decades of them. Birthday cards with cartoon bears, get well cards with watercolour irises, a card from a neighbor who moved away and was never heard from again, a card with a coin still taped inside where a child found it once and put it back. Her mother kept every single one, and Ruth sat down on the kitchen floor with the drawer across her knees and read them for two hours in the middle of a Tuesday.

They were lovely. Every one of them warm, every one of them meant, and not one of them obliging anybody to anything. Love always, they said. Thinking of you. See you soon. Nobody has ever taken a birthday card to a lawyer.

Later that afternoon she went into the cupboard under the stairs for a bin bag and found the tin. Old biscuit tin, rust at the hinge, and inside it, folded in three, the deed to the house.

That was not a card.

No bears on it. No watercolour. Two names in dark ink, a third underneath as witness, a date, and a hard little disc of red pressed into the bottom edge where somebody had leaned on it with a seal. Nothing about that page was warm. It did not tell her mother she was thought of. It told a court that a roof belonged to her, and the roof over Ruth's head at that moment was standing on the strength of it.

She held one in each hand. Cards in the left. Deed in the right. And she understood, the way a person understands a thing all at once on a kitchen floor, that she had spent thirty years reading God out of the wrong hand.

Because so have you. Not through any fault of yours: nobody ever opened the tin in front of you. So every promise you heard read out on a Sunday arrived in the shape of a card, warm and meant and binding on nobody at all.

Now put the drawer down and stand somewhere else for a moment.

A field, late, the light nearly gone. Animals laid on the ground in halves, one half opposite the other, so a path runs between them. An old man promised a son he does not have. Dark comes down and he sleeps, and he sleeps through the whole of it. And down that path, alone, moves a smoking firepot and a burning torch, with nobody walking beside them.

That happened. In a place, on ground, to a man who slept through it.

That is what is in the tin.

Read Like A Greeting Card

What was in the tin was never a card

A card is a report of somebody's affection. It is true, it is lovely, and it can be thrown away without consequence, because nothing else moves when it goes. What the fire walked that night in the field was of another kind entirely. It was an oath, cut into the ground, and the whole weight of it came down on the One who walked it.

Look again at who did the walking. Two parties were named in that field and only one was on his feet. Abram lay flat under a dark he could not lift. Had he staggered up and taken his turn down that lane, half the thing would have rested on him, and the half resting on him is the half that fails. God did not let him near it. God took the man's side of the oath and His own and carried both between the pieces alone.

When the sun went down and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a burning lamp passed between those pieces.Genesis 15:17

Right now, as you read, you are standing inside an oath that was sworn over a sleeping man, and you were inside it long before you could have defined the word. That is not my warm opinion about your morning. Genesis 15:17 puts one fire in that lane with nobody walking beside it, and the Holy Spirit is at work in you this minute, taking an old dark field and setting it down under your feet as ground you can actually stand on.

Nobody signed anything out there. There was no page. The oath was made by cutting, the pieces on the ground were its words, and walking between them said without speech: if I fail you in this, let what has happened here happen to me. That is the only reason blood is anywhere near this subject. Not violence, not spectacle. Blood was the most serious way human beings ever found to say a thing cannot be undone.

The One whose name is on it instead of yours

Centuries later somebody writing to a tired congregation reached for a word out of the world of debt and guarantors, because nothing gentler was strong enough.

By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better covenant.Hebrews 7:22

A surety is the one who stands at the counter and says: if this one cannot cover it, I cover it. Not a well wisher. Not a referee. The one whose own name goes on the line for somebody else's obligation. Hebrews does not say Jesus recommends the covenant, or approves of it, or hopes it goes nicely for you. It says He is the surety of it. He is the disc of red pressed into the bottom of the page.

So hear this while your hands are still. You have a guarantee standing behind every promise you ever half believed, and the guarantee is a Person and not a sentiment. That is written and not felt: Hebrews 7:22 says Jesus was made surety of a better covenant, and His Spirit is the One taking that written line right now and turning it into something you can lean your whole weight against.

And this is yours. Not on loan, not on probation, not a file of warm words about you kept in a drawer somewhere in heaven: the promises you have been reading like a get well card were cut, and the One who cut them stood good for both sides at once. Scripture put that on record centuries before your name existed, and the Spirit is not standing over you waiting for a feeling to arrive first.

There are terms, and an honest article says so. A covenant is not a fog of general goodwill; it has two sides and says plainly who does what, and the division here is not an even one. God's side is the oath, the fire, the surety, the keeping. Your side is the answer: to receive it, to say yes to the Son who stands good for you, and to live from this week as somebody who belongs to the house rather than a guest hoping for another card next year. What is settled is His faithfulness. What is asked is your yes.

The breakthrough

So this does not end with you better informed. Put the cards down. The drawer stays where it is, every kind word in it is still true, and nothing here takes one warm thing away from you.

You are already named in the document. You were brought inside an oath you never negotiated, and you have a surety whose own name is the guarantee of every line of it. Hebrews 7:22 is the written word for that, and the Holy Spirit is saying it into you at whatever hour you happen to be reading, in whatever room, with the kettle on or the house asleep.

Here is what that changes by tomorrow. A card asks nothing of the person who sent it once it is in the drawer. An oath holds the One who swore it, permanently, by His own choice, and He swore this one by Himself because there was nobody higher to swear by. Read the next promise of God you meet out of the right hand.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into anything here. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, given to you the evening the fire went down that lane on its own, and it rests on His word with the Holy Spirit making it live as you say it. What He does next in your week is His to decide, and you speak anyway, because the walking is finished.

  1. Drawer of kept cards, you are not where the promises of God live, and you never were. Hebrews 7:22 calls Jesus the surety of a better covenant, and a surety is a Person standing good for every word in it, so I read those lines from today as a deed and not a greeting. The roof over me was never held up by anybody's good wishes.
  2. Feeling of being liked and never bound to, leave this kitchen. Scripture says Jesus Himself was made the guarantee of a better covenant, and the Holy Spirit is pressing that written line into me as I speak. I am somebody God has bound Himself to, in the name of Jesus, and that was settled in a dark field while a man slept straight through it.
  3. Jesus, You are the surety of this covenant and You have never once asked me to co-sign it. Your word stands whatever this week does with me, and Your Spirit says amen in my chest while I read it. I am taking these promises out of the card drawer this morning and reading them like the deed they always were.
