The Argument Nobody Saw

It ended at about ten past midnight, and the room did not look like anything had happened in it.

Two cups on the table. One with an inch of tea gone cold and a ring drying on the wood. The other one empty, because the other person drank theirs, and said the thing they came to say, and put their coat on, and went.

She sat there a while with the light on. Then she washed both cups, because that is what her hands do when the rest of her has stopped.

Nobody saw it. That is the detail that matters. There was no room full of people, no raised voices in a corridor, nobody in the doorway to say afterwards, I heard that, you were not imagining it, that was as bad as you think. A kitchen at midnight has no witnesses. It has a clock and a fridge that hums and two cups, and whatever gets said there goes into one person's head and stays.

And it has been in hers ever since. Four months. She runs it while she drives. She runs it in the shower. She has got so good at it that she now argues both halves: her own case, sharpened every week into something she will never say, and the other person's case, which she has rehearsed so many times she can deliver it better than they did.

That is the part that is wearing her out. Not the conversation. The carrying of both ends of it.

You know exactly what I mean, because there is a table in your house too, or a car park, or a phone call you took standing up in a corridor. And the strangest thing about it is that the other person has almost certainly moved on. They are not sitting up at midnight running your lines back. You are holding a beam that has one end on your shoulder and the other end on your shoulder, and you have been walking it through doorways on your own since spring.

So put it down for twenty minutes. There is something a covenant does with strength that nobody explains, and it is the whole answer to that kitchen.

The cloak came off first

Two young men in a doorway. One of them is the king's son and dressed like it: an outer robe, a good tunic under it, a sword on a belt, a bow. The other is a shepherd who has just come in from a field with somebody else's blood on his hands and nothing on his back worth naming.

And the prince takes his robe off and gives it to him. Then the tunic. Then the sword, the bow and the belt.

Stop and look at that, because we have made it sentimental and it never was. Those clothes are what a soldier sees at four hundred paces. That belt is a rank. That sword is a house's whole standing in a fight. Everything the prince handed over that afternoon was the answer to the question, who is behind this man if you touch him.

That is what an oath between two people does, and it is not an exchange of feelings. What is mine becomes yours, including my strength, including my name, including whoever has to come out of the palace if somebody moves against you.

You are covered like that, and you were covered before this year started. I am not offering you a comforting thought at the end of a hard season: Scripture puts the robe and the belt into a shepherd's hands as a matter of sworn record, and the Holy Spirit takes that doorway and makes it the plain fact of your Tuesday. What is His is over you.

A boy in a valley says whose it is

Now the other scene, and it is the one people quote without hearing.

A boy stands in the bottom of a valley with an army on each hill, and everyone can see he has no armor, because they tried to put some on him earlier and he could not walk in it. He says something out loud before anything happens. It is not a boast about himself. It is not a prediction of how it goes. He names whose fight it is.

And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's.1 Samuel 17:47

The battle is the LORD's. Present tense, spoken while the ground is still level and nothing is decided.

Look at what that sentence does and does not do. It does not say the boy is strong. It does not describe the next ten minutes. It changes who is standing at the front of the thing. That is all it does, and that is everything, because a fight is defined by who is in it, and up to that moment the whole valley had been doing the arithmetic on the wrong two names.

You have been doing the same arithmetic at that table. You have been adding up what you said against what they said, and the sum has never once come out, because the name that decides a fight keeps getting left out of it. What is written in 1 Samuel 17:47 is not encouragement, it is jurisdiction, and the Holy Spirit is pressing it right now against a conversation nobody else heard.

The person across the table is not your enemy

Say this plainly, because it matters more than the rest.

The other person in that kitchen is not the enemy here, and nothing in this message is aimed at them. They may have been wrong. They may have been tired. It may be complicated in ways you will not untangle this year. None of that is what we are dealing with tonight.

What we are dealing with is a person carrying both ends of a beam. The weight is the enemy. The replaying at midnight is the enemy. The quiet conclusion you drew about yourself in that chair while the tea went cold is the enemy, and it is the one thing in the room you actually have authority over.

And here is what has changed, whether or not the conversation ever gets finished: Right now, as you read, you stop being the prosecution and the defense at the same time. What is written is that the battle belongs to the Lord, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to feel strong about that. He is telling you where to set the beam down.
