Kindness Through AnotherDeuteronomy 9:5

Not Because Of Your Righteousness

This message is for you keep a private ledger of your own behavior and you read every good thing against it

She started the notebook at nineteen, and she has never once shown it to anybody.

It is not a diary. There is nothing in it about her days. It is a list, in small neat handwriting with the dates in the margin, of things she got wrong. The way she spoke to a checkout assistant on a bad afternoon. A message from her aunt she did not answer for nine days and then answered badly. A thing she said about her sister in a car, to somebody who repeated it. None of them are crimes. That is exactly what makes the list so long.

She reads it before anything good. A promotion, a kind word, an unexpected invitation, and she runs it against the notebook first, and the notebook always has more in it than the good thing does, so the good thing arrives already discounted. She has never enjoyed anything at full strength in her adult life.

You do not keep a notebook.

You keep it in your head, which is worse, because a notebook fills up and a head does not. And when something good happens to you, there is a half second before the pleasure lands where you check, quickly, quietly, the way you check a rear view mirror, and the check comes back with a number, and the good thing gets scaled down to what you think you have got coming. You are not a miserable person. You are just very well audited.

So come and stand on a ridge with me and look down at something.

There is a whole nation up on that ridge, dusty, forty years out of a desert, and below them the ground drops away into a valley with water in it. Terraces. Olive trees somebody else planted. Wells somebody else dug. Houses with roofs on. It is the best thing any of them has ever seen and it is about to be handed to them.

And an old man turns them round before they go down and tells them the one thing they must not get wrong about it.

It is not because of your righteousness.

Not because you were good. Not because you have kept a clean list, and none of you has. It is being given to you because of an oath, sworn a long time ago, to three men who are not standing on this ridge and have been dead for centuries.

You are going down into a valley that has your name on it because of a promise God made about somebody else.

That is the sentence. Read it again if it slid off, because it slides off everybody the first time: the good thing arriving is not being weighed against your record at all. It is not even in the same room as your record. It is being weighed against an oath, and the oath was sworn about another man entirely.

Not Because Of Your Righteousness

The sentence on the ridge

Here is the line itself, and notice how little room it leaves for negotiation.

Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land ... that he may perform the word which he sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.Deuteronomy 9:5

That he may perform the word which he sware. God is doing something He said. He is not responding to a performance review, and He is not weighing up whether this particular generation has earned a valley, because that was never the mechanism.

Which changes what you have been doing every morning without knowing it was optional. You have been running an audit that God is not running, and the ledger has been answering a question nobody asked. Deuteronomy 9:5 is written and kept precisely so that a person can stop, and the Holy Spirit is holding it open in front of you now rather than filing it under ancient history.

For the sake of somebody else

This is how covenant kindness always travels, and once you see it you will find it everywhere.

There is a young man in an old story who has been living in a place with a name that means nothing green. He cannot walk. He is the grandson of a king whose house lost everything, and by every rule anybody knew, he is the last person who should ever be found by the new king's people.

And they come for him anyway, and carry him to a palace, and the king says the thing out loud: I am doing this for the sake of your father, because of what I swore to him.

Then the young man eats at the king's table for the rest of his life. Not once. Every day, at the table, with the king's own sons.

So look at what is actually holding that chair up. Not his usefulness, which is none. Not his record, which is a liability. An oath, sworn years earlier to a man he barely remembers, and a king who intends to keep it. You have been seated on exactly the same terms, and it was settled about Christ long before it was applied to you: what is written puts the reason in His name, and the Spirit is the one carrying it from that palace to this room.

This is not charity and you are not a case

Now hear the part that matters most, because the message can be got right and still land wrong.

A king keeping an oath is not being generous. He is being faithful. The obligation is on his side of the table, not on the guest's, which means the man eating there every night is not a mercy admission who ought to keep his head down. He is the visible proof that the king's word holds.

And that is why you can put the notebook down without pretending your list is shorter than it is. You are not at the table on a lowered standard. You were brought in on a met one, His, and the good things that arrive are not being scaled to your fortnight; they are arriving for His sake, which is written all through Scripture and which the Holy Spirit is applying to you at your actual size right now.

Nobody at that table outranks you either. Every person in that room is there for the same reason, including the ones you have been comparing yourself to. There is only ever one reason.

The breakthrough

So put it down. Not because the list is inaccurate. Because it is not the deed to anything.

Right now, as you read, every good thing coming toward you is arriving for the sake of Christ and not against your record, and that was the arrangement before you ever heard the word covenant. You are not being tolerated at a table, and you were never admitted on a lowered bar. Deuteronomy 9:5 says the reason out loud and refuses to flatter anybody, and the Holy Spirit is not showing it to you to humble you. He is showing it to you to get you eating.

The audit you run in the half second before joy lands has been asking a question that was settled in another man's name. You have nothing to weigh. The valley is being given because of an oath, and the oath is being kept.

Declare this over yourself

Nothing here is you making a case for yourself, and it is a relief that you cannot. The standing to say it belongs to you in Christ and was given to you for His sake rather than earned by a good fortnight. Scripture supplies the words and the Holy Spirit makes them live in you, and what He does about the ledger in your head after that is His to decide, so speak it and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Ledger I have kept since I was nineteen, you were never the deed to anything. Deuteronomy 9:5 hands over a whole valley and names somebody else's oath as the reason, out loud, in front of everybody. In the name of Jesus I close you tonight and I do not open you in the morning.
  2. Charge sheet I read every good thing against, you do not match the paperwork. A king who keeps an oath is not doing charity; he is doing exactly what he swore, and Scripture puts that obligation on His side and never once on mine. I sit where I sit because a promise was made about somebody else and my name got put inside it.
  3. Father, You are keeping an oath tonight and not doing me a favor, and You said so on a ridge above a green valley before anybody could take credit for the view. You put my name inside a promise You made concerning Christ, so every good thing arrives addressed for His sake and not against my record. I am saying His name out loud today in the place where I used to say my score.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
