Kindness Through Another2 Samuel 9:7

The Table Is Not For The Useful

This message is for you cannot work the way you used to and you assume God interest in you left when your usefulness did

They came for him in a cart, and he spent the whole road working out what he had done.

He had been living in a town at the edge of nowhere, in another man's house, keeping his head down for years. When he was five there had been a bad day and a fall, and both his feet had been wrong ever since, and in a world where a man's worth was measured in what he could carry, that had settled the question of his future before he could read.

He knew who his grandfather had been. He knew what usually happens to the grandsons of a fallen house when a new king finally gets round to the paperwork.

So they carried him up the steps, two men with their arms crossed under him, into a hall with a floor so polished it embarrassed him, and set him down in front of the throne. He got himself onto his face as best he could, which was not well, and he said the sentence he had been rehearsing in the cart. Something about being a dead dog. Something about being nothing worth the king's trouble.

And then the king came down the steps.

He came down off the throne and stood over this man on the polished floor and said, do not be afraid, and then told him three things. Kindness is coming to you. Everything your family lost is coming back. And you will eat at my table from now on, every day, permanently, as one of my own sons.

The man on the floor said nothing for a moment. Because he knew the arithmetic. He could not fight. He could not farm the land being handed back to him. He could not stand up to bow properly to the man giving it. There was not one item on the list of things a king needs that he could supply, and the king knew that before the cart was sent.

Then the king said the reason, and the reason had nothing to do with him at all.

You know the arithmetic he was doing on that floor. You have been doing it for a while now.

Because you cannot do what you used to. Maybe your back went, or the illness stayed, or you got made redundant at fifty eight and nobody says no to you outright, they just do not call. Maybe you were the one who helped everybody move house and now people carry things in to you and you say thank you and hate it. And somewhere in the last couple of years, without ever deciding to, you moved yourself into a different column: you used to be an asset and now you think you are an item of expenditure.

And you have quietly assumed that God does the same sums, and that His interest in you thinned out at about the same rate your usefulness did.

The Table Is Not For The Useful

The reason had somebody else's name in it

The man on the floor was called Mephibosheth. The king was David, who was at the height of everything by then, and the whole scene begins with a question he asks his household out of nowhere.

He asks whether anybody is left of the old house, so that he can show them kindness. Not so that he can employ them. Not so that he can neutralize a rival. So that he can be kind. And then he says why.

And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.2 Samuel 9:7

For Jonathan's sake.

Years earlier, on a palace floor, Jonathan had taken off his own robe and armor and given them to David, and the two of them had bound themselves to each other for good, with a clause in it about what would happen to their families afterward. Jonathan was long gone by the day the cart went out. The binding was not.

So the kindness arriving in that hall was real kindness, aimed at a real man, and none of it was generated by anything the man had done, could do, or would ever do again. It came down the line of a relationship he had not been part of, and it reached him because of a name he shared rather than a service he offered.

That is what covenant kindness is, and it is the piece nobody ever explains. It is not charity, because charity looks at need. It is not wages, because wages look at output. It looks at somebody else, and then it comes to you.

You are on the receiving end of exactly that, and it is not a consolation prize handed to you now that your working years are behind you. 2 Samuel 9:7 shows kindness traveling down a name to a man who could supply nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the One walking that same scene into your kitchen, where you have been keeping accounts on yourself.

Nobody at that table got there on merit

Here is the part that keeps a person from feeling like the pity case at the end of the bench.

Mephibosheth ate at the king's table with David's own sons. Look around that table. The sons were not there because they were productive either. They were there because of whose they were. Every single person eating in that room was eating on the strength of a relationship rather than a contribution, and the only thing that made Mephibosheth different was that he was the one who knew it.

That is not a lesser seat. That is the same seat with the truth attached.

And it means the comparison you have been running is broken at the root. The people you look at, the ones still working, still serving, still driving to things at seven in the morning, are inside this for exactly the same reason you are: for Christ's sake and no other. Nobody gets a stronger claim by being busier.

You have not slipped down a ranking, because Scripture never issued one. His word ties the whole thing to a name that is not yours, and the Spirit is the One making that land as relief instead of as insult.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and I want it to land where you actually live.

Your usefulness was never the thing holding you in. It felt like it was, because for thirty years the two things arrived together and nobody separated them for you. Now that one has gone and the other has not, you can finally see which was which.

The seat you have is not a sympathy seat and you are not being kept on out of decency. It was assigned in a binding, for the sake of Somebody the Father loves, and it does not have a productivity clause because the whole thing was never built on your production in the first place.

You are eating at that table continually, and continually is the word the text uses. 2 Samuel 9:7 says at my table, every day, as one of my own, and the Holy Spirit is putting you in that chair right now, in a body that does not do what it used to, exactly as you are.

Stop apologizing when you walk in.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking your way into a room tonight. The seat is yours in Christ, given to you for somebody else's sake, and 2 Samuel 9:7 is what it stands on rather than anything you got done this month. Say these out loud, and leave the outcome to Him: the words are His word, the power in them is the Holy Spirit, and He answers as He chooses, in His own timing.

  1. Work I cannot do any more, you are not the measure of me. For thirty years you and my worth walked in the door together and I never once saw them as two things, and now that only one of you is here I can see the other one plainly. In the name of Jesus I am kept by a binding with no productivity clause in it.
  2. Ledger in my head that I am a cost, go. You have had me sitting in company doing arithmetic about what I bring, as though the men at that king's table were audited on their output. Scripture says the kindness came down another man's name, and my usefulness was never the door.
  3. Christ, You are the One for whose sake I am at this table, and there has never been a second reason for anybody sitting at it. Your word says kindness comes for the sake of a name, and Your Spirit is holding the chair out while I read. So I stop apologizing at the door, and I sit down and eat.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
