The hall empties faster than you expect.
Twenty minutes ago it was full and somebody was crying two rows in front and the room was thick with it. Now there is one man winding a cable round his elbow, two women laughing by the door about something that happened at work, and a boy stacking chairs eight at a time and dropping the eighth every time.
And you.
You are still in the third row from the back with your coat over your arm, and you have been in the third row from the back for eleven years. You come. You put money in when there is a thing. You know all the words to everything and you have opinions about the sound desk. And in eleven years nobody has ever turned round and said it to you.
Not: welcome, mate. Not: good to see you. Everybody says that. The other thing. The sentence somebody says to a person's actual face, looking at them, using their name, that says you are in this. Not the group, not the hall, not the general public. You.
So you have built a very reasonable conclusion out of eleven years of silence, and you have never once said it out loud: it must not be for me. Not that it is false. That it is for the ones somebody said it to. And you stand at the back of a thing you have been paying into for over a decade, wondering when somebody with the authority to do it is going to come along and put you inside.
Come out of the hall. It is a different building and a much older night.
A street in a foreign country, and every house on it is doing the same thing at the same time. The doors and the frames are being marked, up and across, wet and dark in the last of the light. Inside each house a family, dressed for a journey, eating standing up because there is not time to sit, and the smell of roasted meat in a room where nobody is relaxed.
And in one of those rooms there is a small child asleep on somebody's knee.
She has understood none of it. She could not tell you what tonight is. She did not help with the door and she was not consulted about any of it, and she will not remember one thing about the meal in the morning.
And she is exactly as inside that house as her father is.
Nobody came down that street with a register. There was no line where the ones who had grasped it stood on one side and the ones who had not stood on the other. There was a door, and a mark on it that somebody else had put there, and everybody in the room was under it.
That happened. On a street, on a night, with families and doorframes and a sleeping child who was covered by something she could not have explained.

Nobody was let in by being told
Look at what was doing the work that night, because it was not comprehension and it was not somebody's welcome.
It was the mark on the door, and the mark was on the outside where the family could not see it. They were inside the room. The thing that put them inside was applied from the other side of the wood by an instruction none of them wrote, and their safety that night had nothing whatever to do with how well any of them had followed the reasoning.
That is worth sitting with if you have spent eleven years waiting for somebody official to include you. There was never a person in the doorway with a list. There was a door, and there was a mark, and inside was inside.
Right now, as you read, you are being spoken to by name even though nobody in that hall managed it, and you were never actually waiting on a human being's sentence. Scripture puts the whole weight on a mark somebody else made, and the Holy Spirit is at work in you this minute doing what eleven years of Sundays could not do, which is to say it to you personally.
The witness was never going to come from the front
Here is the line, and it is not addressed to the impressive.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.Romans 8:16
Read where that witness is happening. Not at a microphone. Not in a conversation somebody keeps failing to have with you at the end of a service. Inside. God's own Spirit, testifying alongside your own spirit, in the only room where a thing like that could ever be settled beyond argument.
Which means the thing you have been waiting eleven years for was never on the schedule, and it was never withheld from you by anybody. No leader was ever going to be able to do it. A person can tell you the news and a person can be kind to you, but no human being on earth has ever had the standing to put another human being inside this, and the ones who tried were mistaken about their own job.
So you have a witness available to you that does not run through anybody's clipboard, and you have it in the third row from the back with your coat over your arm. That is written, not felt: Romans 8:16 says the Spirit bears witness with our spirit, and His Spirit is the One who does the saying while everybody else is stacking chairs.
There are terms, and they are not what you were waiting for
Let me be honest about the shape of this, because a discovery that leaves out the terms is not the truth.
God's side is the entire weight. The oath, the mark, the blood, the Son given, the door opened from His side and never from ours. Settled, sworn, finished, and not one part of it waiting on your understanding or your feelings or your attendance record.
Your side is one thing and it is not a qualification. It is an answer. Somebody has to say yes to Christ, and the somebody is you, and nobody can do it on your behalf, which is exactly why eleven years of waiting for a person to say it to you was always going to be eleven years. The mark was made for you. The saying yes is yours.
That is not a hurdle. It is the least anybody has ever been asked for, and it is the one thing a stranger at the front could never have done in your place.
So this does not end with you understanding covenant, and it was never going to.
You are not outside a locked thing waiting on a keyholder. You have a door that was marked from the other side and a Spirit sent expressly to say so inside you, and Romans 8:16 is the written word for it. The Holy Spirit is doing it now, in this room, before anybody in a hall gets round to it, and whether or not one single person ever says the sentence to your face.
So stop waiting for the person. They were never coming, and it was never their job, and the eleven years were not you being overlooked by God.
Here is what happens instead, and it happens in the next two minutes rather than at some better moment. You say it yourself. Out loud, to Him, in your own words, from the third row or the car or the kitchen. Whether this is the first time such a thing ever left your mouth or the ten thousandth, the same One hears it, and He has been waiting far longer than you.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking your way in. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, given to you by a door that was marked from His side while you were still working out what any of it meant, and it stands on His word with the Holy Spirit making it live as you say it. What He does in you next, and when, is His to decide, and you speak anyway, because the door was open before you got to it.
- Stack of chairs in an empty hall, you are not the edge of anything, and eleven years of silence in you is not a verdict. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit of God bears witness with my own spirit, so I stopped waiting for a person the moment I read that. This room was never the doorway.
- Conclusion that I was never actually meant, get out of my coat pocket. In the name of Jesus I am putting you out of the third row, because the mark on that door was made by Somebody else and nobody in the house had to earn the room. I am meant, and I am saying so in daylight with my own mouth.
- Lord, You are the One who opened this from Your side and sent Your Spirit to say it to me where no leader could reach, and You have said it. Your word calls me a child of God, and Your Spirit is agreeing with my spirit while I stand here with my coat over my arm. I am Yours, out loud, tonight, and I am not standing outside it any longer.
