Waiting To Feel Qualified

This message is for you understand it now and you are waiting to feel qualified before you act as though it is yours

The room is full and the door is open and she is standing in the doorway with one hand on the frame.

She was invited. Properly invited, by name, twice, and the second time somebody said please come, we want you there. There is a chair free. Somebody has already moved a bag off it without being asked. The noise coming out of that room is good noise, the kind with laughing in it.

And she is standing in the doorway.

She is not going to go and stand somewhere else. She will do this for eleven minutes and then someone will spot her and say come in, come in, and she will go in, and it will be lovely, and next time she will stand in the doorway again.

If you asked her, she would not say she felt unwelcome. She would say something more honest and much harder to argue with: I will go in in a minute. I am just waiting for the right moment. Which means: I am waiting to feel like somebody who walks into a room like that.

Now put your hand on the frame and hold it there, because there is another doorway, and it is a very old one.

There was a curtain once, in a building in a city on a hill. Not a curtain like a curtain. It was thick, woven, heavy as a wall, blue and purple and scarlet, with figures worked into it by hand over months. It hung across a doorway that almost nobody went through. One man, once a year, carefully and never casually, and everyone in that nation understood exactly what the cloth meant: there is a room, and it is not yours, and the distance is not rudeness, it is the way it is.

That curtain stood for centuries. Children grew up under the fact of it. It was not an insult. It was simply the arrangement, the way a locked staff door in a hospital is not an insult.

And then, one Friday afternoon, in a city busy with something else entirely, that cloth tore.

Not frayed. Not taken down for cleaning. Tore, from the top down, the whole height of it, with nobody standing near enough to have done it, and it was torn from the top because no human hand starts at the top of something that high. Whoever tore it was on the other side.

Nobody was invited to help. Nobody was consulted about whether the room was ready for visitors. The barrier came apart from the far end while the people who would spend the rest of their lives walking through it were somewhere else, doing something ordinary, entirely unaware that access had just changed for good.

You are standing in a doorway with your hand on the frame, waiting for the right moment, in a house where the door was taken off its hinges two thousand years ago by Somebody standing on the inside.

Waiting To Feel Qualified

The tear started at the top

Everything in this article is in the direction of that tear, so stay with it a moment longer.

If the cloth had torn from the bottom, this would be a completely different story and a much worse one. A tear from the bottom is somebody working their way up: effort, reaching, getting there eventually. A tear from the top is a decision taken above your head and applied to you, finished before you heard about it.

That is what a covenant is, and it is why the word matters. Not a bargain two parties negotiate, where you bring what you have and they bring what they have and you meet in the middle. An oath one party swears and then executes. The whole story of it, from a fire moving alone between the pieces in a dark field to a curtain coming apart from the top, is the story of God doing the binding part Himself while people slept, or looked away, or were simply busy elsewhere.

You are inside it, and you were inside it before you understood a word of what you have been reading. I am not warming you up here: Hebrews 10:20 calls that torn curtain a new and living way opened for us, and the Holy Spirit is the One who moves that from a fact you now know into a room you are standing in.

Confidence is not a feeling

Here is the sentence that keeps people in doorways for decades, so let us take it apart carefully.

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus.Hebrews 10:19

The word confidence in that line is not describing an emotional state. It is nearer to the word we use for a right of entry: the standing to speak, the freedom to come in without an appointment. It is a legal fact about where you may go, not a report on how bold you happen to feel this evening.

Which means the sentence you have been living by has a mistake in it. You have been treating confidence as the qualification for coming in, when Scripture treats it as the thing already handed to you at the door. You have the entry, and you were given it by the blood of Jesus rather than by any improvement in yourself, and the Spirit is the One who makes an ancient word like access stop sounding technical and start sounding like your own front door.

And notice what the verse does not say. It does not say enter once you are ready. It does not say enter carefully. It does not put a single condition on the person entering, and the only reason given for the entry is the name at the end of the line.

There are terms in this, and they are worth naming plainly, because a covenant without terms is a mood and I am not selling you a mood. What is settled is His: the oath, the tearing, the way opened, the keeping of it. What is yours is to walk through. Not to earn it, not to feel it, not to wait for a mood that agrees with it. To walk through, which is the one thing nobody can do on your behalf.

The breakthrough

So take your hand off the frame.

You are already inside this. Not on the waiting list, not in the corridor, not in the process of becoming eligible. Hebrews 10:19 hands you the right of entry on the strength of Jesus and nothing else, and the Holy Spirit is not standing between you and the room; He is the One drawing you into it while you read.

You have understood something today. That is good, and it is also the exact point where most people close a page and go and make tea, informed and still standing in the doorway. Understanding is not the destination. It was the invitation, and it has already been accepted on your behalf.

So do not finish this as a person who now knows what a covenant is. Finish it as a person who is in one, which Hebrews 10:19 says you have been the whole time, and which the Holy Spirit is settling into you while the kettle is still cold.

Declare this over yourself

Nobody is asking you to feel ready. This standing is yours in Christ, it was given to you by a tear that started at the top and had nothing to do with your reaching, and Scripture is the ground under it with the Holy Spirit making it live in your mouth. What He does in you after this is His to decide, in His own timing, and you speak now, from inside, because inside is where you already are.

  1. Doorway I keep standing in, you are not a waiting area and you were never a test. Hebrews 10:19 gives the right of entry by the blood of Jesus and asks nothing whatsoever of the one walking through, so you can stop pretending to be a threshold. I am through you, and I am not coming back out to check.
  2. Waiting to feel qualified, you are finished in the name of Jesus, and you are taking your eleven minutes and your hand on the frame with you. The curtain tore from the top down, which means nobody was ever reaching up and everyone was simply being let in. I am sitting down in the middle of the room.
  3. Father, You tore the thing that stood between us Yourself, from Your side, while the city was busy doing something else, and by Your Spirit You are drawing me in as I speak. I am not asking for entry; I am using it. Whatever You do in me from here is Yours to decide, and I am inside, talking to You like somebody who lives here.
