The Bow Was Not Put There For You To Remember

This message is for you think the sign is your memory of the day, so when the memory goes soft you assume the thing went with it

There is a tin at the back of a drawer with three things in it: half a candle, a folded paper gone soft at the creases, and a stone off a hillside path.

She keeps it because of a night eleven years ago. She could tell you the weather that night and the color of the room and where she was standing when it happened, and for about four years she could tell you and feel it at the same time. The telling would bring it back up through her like heat off a road.

Then it thinned. Not all at once and not because of anything she did. The details stayed and the heat went out of them, the way a photograph of a person you love stops being the person. Now she can recite it accurately, and reciting it does nothing, and she has quietly begun to suspect that the whole thing thinned out with the feeling. That whatever happened to her that night had a shelf life, and she has been living off it a long way past the date.

You have a tin like that, or you have the empty space where one should be, and the empty space is worse.

Because you have watched other people describe their night on the hillside with the heat still in it, and you have done the arithmetic on yourself and not liked the answer. So you check. That is the thing nobody says out loud: you check. You take the temperature of your own heart on a Tuesday to find out whether you are still inside anything, and the reading comes back low, and you write yourself a small verdict.

So come and stand on some wet ground with me.

The water has gone down. The whole world smells of mud and rope and wet timber, and the ground steams where the sun hits it. A family comes down a ramp with animals going ahead of them, unsteady on legs that have not walked on anything solid in a year. They build a small altar out of loose stones because there is nothing else to build one with.

And over the far hills, standing up out of a cloud with light behind it, there is a bow.

Not a weapon. An arc of color, the ordinary kind, the kind you have pulled over on a road to look at.

And a voice says what it is for. I set my bow in the cloud. It shall be a sign. And when the cloud comes over the earth, the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will look upon it, and I will remember.

Read that again slowly, and notice who is doing the looking.

Not the family on the ramp. Not their children. Not you. The bow is set at the height where the One who swore the oath is the One who sees it, and the remembering that keeps it standing is His remembering, and it was arranged that way on purpose, on the first morning, before anybody had a chance to get tired.

The Bow Was Not Put There For You To Remember

Where the sign was hung

This is the sentence that reorganizes everything, and it is one line long.

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.Genesis 9:13

Between me and the earth. Not between me and how well the earth remembers this. Three verses later the point is made even plainer: the bow is in the cloud, and God says He will look upon it and remember.

So the sign was never a memory aid for the small party standing in the mud. It was hung high, in public, where weather happens, on the side of the sky that belongs to Him. And that is why it survives every generation that never saw a flood and every person on that hillside who woke up the next week feeling ordinary.

You have been carrying the sign in the wrong place. You put it in your chest and checked it like a pocket, and it was never yours to keep; Genesis 9:13 hangs it where the Holy Spirit can point at it in front of you rather than inside you.

The memory is not the sign

Here is the confusion, and it is a completely reasonable one, and nobody ever untangled it for you.

Something real happened to you. A night, a service, a hospital corridor, a road, a kitchen at four in the morning, and God was unmistakably in it. And because the feeling came with the event, you filed the feeling as the evidence. So when the feeling faded, which is what feelings do, the evidence appeared to fade with it, and there has been a slow leak ever since.

But a memory is a record of something. A sign is a standing thing. A boundary stone does not stop marking the boundary when the man who watched it being set has died, and a bow in a cloud does not come down because the people underneath it have had a flat month.

And if you never had a night like that at all, nothing in this shrinks by an inch. The sign was not hung on anybody's best evening. You are not further out than the person with the vivid story, and you were not admitted on the strength of an experience: what is written puts the sign in the sky and the seal in His own hand, and the Spirit is the One quietly holding both while you read this.

The sign He gave you is not made of feeling

Under the covenant you are actually standing in, the sign God gave is not an object you can lose in a house move.

In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.Ephesians 1:13

A seal is a mark of ownership pressed by somebody with the authority to press it. It goes on from the outside. It is not applied by the enthusiasm of the person receiving it, and it does not lift off on a low week, and nobody has ever been asked to keep re-pressing it themselves.

So you are sealed, right now, at whatever temperature you happen to be reading this. That is Ephesians 1:13 and not my opinion of you, and the Spirit named in that verse is the seal Himself, which means the very One you keep failing to feel is the evidence you keep asking for.

The breakthrough

So put the checking down. Not as a discipline. As a fact.

Right now, as you read, the sign over your life is standing exactly where it was set, in front of the eyes of the God who set it, and your memory of a night eleven years ago was never load bearing. You are sealed, and you were sealed on His initiative, and Ephesians 1:13 does not put a renewal date anywhere near it. The Holy Spirit is not asking you to work the feeling back up. He is showing you the bow.

The thing you have been afraid of, that it quietly expired while you were not looking, cannot happen to a sign hung on His side of the sky.

Declare this over yourself

You are not about to talk a feeling back into existence, and you would not want it if you could. The right to say these words belongs to you in Christ and is yours in a thin week exactly as much as in a strong one, because it was given to you on the day the sign was set and not on the day you last felt something. Scripture supplies the words and the Holy Spirit makes them stand, and what He does with your feelings afterwards is His to decide, so speak and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Memory that has gone soft, you were never the sign and you were never asked to be. The bow stands in the cloud on the side of the sky where God looks, and Genesis 9:13 says plainly whose eyes it was hung for. In the name of Jesus I stop reading my own weather for a verdict.
  2. Suspicion that mine quietly expired, you do not get a vote here. What was set in the sky does not dim when I dim, and Scripture puts the remembering in God's hands rather than in my head. I hold a sign, not a souvenir.
  3. Lord, You are the One looking at the bow, and You said so out loud long before anybody thought to ask You for reassurance. You hung the sign where Your eyes are instead of where my memory is, so the thinnest week I ever have does not move it an inch. I am naming the sign today in place of the feeling, and I am saying it out loud.
