When The Memory Went

This message is for your memory is not what it was and you are frightened that whatever you cannot recall you have lost

The lists began with the bins, which seemed reasonable enough. Green one week, black the next, and the card taped up beside the light switch so she could check it on her way past.

Then there was a list for the immersion heater. Then one that said which of the three keys on the ring opened the side door, which she had known for thirty-one years and then one Thursday did not. The lists crept along the wall beside the switch until there were six of them, in her own handwriting, getting larger.

She did not mind the bins. She minded the afternoon her grandson came to the door and she was glad to see him for a whole second and a half before she was quite sure who he was.

And underneath all of it, not on any card, there was one thing she had been circling for months and had not said to a living person.

She could not get the night back.

There had been a meeting in a canvas tent at the bottom of the fairground field when she was nineteen. She knew that. It was a fact she owned the way she owned the year of her mother's death, flat and true and with nothing on it. But the night itself, the sawdust smell and what the preacher said and what she prayed and, above all, the enormous warm certainty that had gone through her and had lasted for years afterwards and had been the floor under everything, that was gone. Not faded. Gone, like a room you cannot find the door to.

And she had begun, very quietly, at four in the morning mostly, to do the arithmetic she was frightened of. If she could not produce the night, did she still have the thing the night gave her? If the certainty had been the proof, and the certainty had gone, what exactly was she standing on?

Now come and stand in her kitchen for a minute, because you know this one.

Maybe your version is not illness at all. Maybe you are forty-one and simply cannot feel what you felt at nineteen, and you have been treating that as evidence. Maybe there was never a tent or a night or a moment, and you have listened to other people describe theirs and quietly concluded that whatever they got, you did not. Either way you have been doing the same arithmetic she was doing, and getting the same frightening answer, and telling nobody.

There is a sign in this covenant, and God did not put it in your memory.

When The Memory Went

Where He put it, and why that is the whole point

Come out of the kitchen and stand on a wet mountain with a man who has just come out of a boat.

Everything is mud and wreckage and the strange silence after months of rain. Noah builds a fire on the high ground. And while the smoke is going up, the light comes through the water still hanging in the air and lays a great colored arc right across the sky, and God speaks over it.

Now listen to what He actually says about that bow, because almost everybody remembers it wrong.

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.Genesis 9:16

I will look upon it. Not you. Him.

The sign was not hung in the sky as a reassurance poster for people to consult when they get nervous. It was hung where God looks, and the remembering it triggers is His. That is not a technicality. That is the entire design, and it was designed that way because He knows exactly what people are made of. We are made of weather. We forget the bins.

So you are inside something whose reminder does not depend on your recall, and you were inside it on every single morning you woke up with nothing in your chest. That is not a comfort I am inventing to be kind: Genesis 9:16 puts the looking on God's side of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one taking a sign hung over a drowned world and standing you underneath it in your own kitchen.

A name cut into something that stays

There is a second picture, and it is even plainer.

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God.Revelation 3:12

The people who first read that lived in a town that shook. Their ground moved often enough that they had learned to sleep light and keep to the open. They knew what happened to a building in a bad one, and they knew the one thing that was usually still standing in the morning: a pillar, with the name of whoever gave it cut into the stone.

Understand what a name on a pillar means. The person whose name it is does not have to be present. Does not have to remember the day. Does not have to feel anything at all about it on a Tuesday in November. The stone holds it, and the stone is not having a bad week.

You are named on something that does not move, and it was cut there without your signature and stays cut whatever your Thursday is doing. The word of God puts the writing in His hand, and the Spirit is not asking you to verify it out of a memory that has been giving way for years.

Nobody is grading your moment

Now let me clear away the rubble that has been piled on top of this, because a lot of well-meaning people put it there.

There is no ritual in this article. There is nothing you have to perform, no words in a particular order, no candle, no anniversary to keep. And there is no league table of conversions where the ones with the good story sit at the top.

Some people have a night in a tent. Some people cannot tell you a day, only that at some point they stopped being outside and started being inside, the way you cannot name the morning it became spring. Some people were four years old. None of that changes the sign, because the sign was never a report of the person's experience. It is a mark God made, on His side, in His own hand.

And this is where it lands on you specifically. You have been treating a feeling as the receipt. Feelings are true and God gives them freely and there is nothing wrong with the warmth you had at nineteen. But a receipt that fades was never what a covenant runs on, which is why He never gave you one. What is written is a name, and where it is written is a pillar, and His Spirit has been holding you inside that on every day you could not have told anybody why you were still here.

There is a part that belongs to you, because covenant is never nothing asked. God's part is the sign and He has set it and will not take it down. Your part is to say it back. To name the sign instead of hunting the feeling, out loud, when the four in the morning arithmetic starts up again.

The breakthrough

Put your hand flat on the table for a second.

Here is what is actually true of you while you sit there. You are inside a covenant whose sign is in the sky and whose record is in stone, and neither one of them is stored in the part of you that has been failing. The night in the tent was lovely. The night in the tent was not the thing holding you. Revelation 3:12 has your name in the hand of God and it has never once been in yours, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for your recall to come back before He makes that real to you.

So stop searching the room for a door that is not there. You have been trying to prove you are inside by producing an experience, and the whole point of a sign is that it stands outside the person, exactly so that a woman with six cards taped by her light switch is standing on the same ground as the woman who can tell you the date and the hymn number.

And if there was never a night at all, hear this plainly: you are not behind. Nowhere is it written that a story is the entrance fee, and the Spirit set that bow over people who had done nothing that morning but survive.

Declare this over yourself

You do not speak these because you have retrieved anything. You speak them because in Christ a sign was set and a name was written, and that standing was given to you rather than remembered by you. Scripture supplies the words and the Holy Spirit supplies the weight, and what God restores or does not restore of your memory is His to decide, in His own timing.

  1. List taped by the light switch, you are a kindness and you are not my verdict. Scripture says God put the bow in the cloud where He looks and not in my head where things go missing, so my keeping of it was never the hinge. I am not the keeper of this record, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that I am slipping out of it, you have no claim on a name that God cut into a pillar. What I cannot bring back was never the thing holding me, and He has not once mislaid what He wrote down. I stand on the stone and not on my recollection of a tent.
  3. Father, You said You would look upon the bow and remember, and You have never once asked me to do the remembering for You. You are the God who writes names into things that outlast the people who read them, and Your word keeps what my kitchen cards cannot. I am saying the sign out loud today instead of hunting for the feeling.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
