The curtains in Claire's room have been half shut since about March, and it is now the following March, and she could not tell you the day she stopped opening them properly.
Nothing is wrong. That is the thing she cannot explain to anybody who asks. She gets up. She works. She is kind to the woman on the checkout. She goes to church most weeks and stands when everyone stands and knows all the words. Nothing is wrong and nothing is anything.
There was a time when a line in a song could take her legs out from under her. She used to come home from a Sunday evening with her hands still warm. She remembers a specific night, years ago now, when she cried for forty minutes on a friend's kitchen floor and could not have told you why, and it was the best night of her life.
And then, without a decision anywhere, it went quiet. A year of quiet. Flat as a table.
She has stopped saying it out loud because of what people do with it, but the sentence has moved in and made itself at home: if I cannot feel any of it, then probably none of it was ever there.
You know that sentence. Maybe your quiet is two years old, or six. Maybe it arrived after something, or maybe it arrived after nothing at all, which is somehow worse. And maybe you have started auditing your own past for the exact moment you made it all up.
So come and stand in a doorway in an old market town, because there is a scene here that will change what you are reading.
Two men have agreed on a price for a field. There is no bank, no paperwork, no lawyer. What there is: a table, four or five neighbors standing around it as witnesses, and one of the men reaching into a pouch.
He counts coins onto the wood. Not the full price. A portion of it, counted out slowly enough that every person in that doorway can see and hear it land.
And that is the moment everything changes, because those coins are not a gift and they are not a gesture of goodwill. They are a down payment, and in that world a down payment binds. The man who put money on that table cannot now walk away from the deal, and everyone standing there knows it, and the seller knows it best of all. He is not holding a promise. He is holding metal.
Nobody in that room asks the seller how he feels about it.

What was actually put down on the table
Now hold that picture and let me read you one line of Scripture, because it uses that exact commercial word and most of us have read straight past it.
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.2 Corinthians 1:22
Earnest is the word for those coins on the wood. A down payment. The binding portion handed over in front of witnesses that commits the payer to everything still owed.
And what God put down on the table was not a feeling He gave you once on a kitchen floor. It was His own Spirit, laid down inside a person, as the binding first installment of everything He has committed Himself to.
You are holding metal, not a mood, and you were holding it through every flat month of the last year. That line is the receipt, and Scripture chose the market word on purpose; the Holy Spirit is not the feeling that came and went, He is the deposit itself, still lying on the table where God counted Him out.
The sign was hung where He looks
There is a second picture and it settles the question of who a sign is for.
Rain has stopped. A family is standing on wet ground with a whole drowned world behind them, and God hangs something in the sky. A bow in the cloud. And then He says the thing that ought to undo us: I will look upon it, and remember.
Read that again slowly. He does not say: look at it whenever you need reassuring. He does not say: the strength of your remembering keeps this alive. He says He will look at it.
The sign was hung where God looks, and it holds up in weather where nobody on the ground can see the sky at all.
You have a sign that does not live in your memory and never depended on it, and that is what is written into the way God does covenants: He puts the sign on His own side. His Spirit is the mark on you, and He is looking at the mark right now while you look at half shut curtains and conclude the wrong thing from them.
The feeling was real, and it was never the sign
Let me say something gently, because this is where people get hurt.
That night on the kitchen floor was not a fiction. Feelings are real, and God is not miserly with them, and there is nothing wrong with wanting them back. But a feeling was never the sign, and it never certified anything, and a person who has never once cried in a service is not standing further from God than a person who cries every week.
And hear this too: nobody here is asking you to perform something to fix it. There is no exercise, no atmosphere to generate, no seven day plan, and if anybody hands you one, put it down. The sign was already given.
One more thing, said plainly. If what you are carrying is heavier than flat, if it has weight in it and not just quiet, please tell a doctor, or a person who can sit with you properly. Going to them is wisdom and it has never once been the opposite of faith.
You are sealed, and you were sealed on a day that had nothing to do with your emotional weather. Scripture calls it a seal and a deposit in the same breath, and the Spirit of God who was given as that deposit does not evaporate in a dry year, because a deposit that could evaporate would never have bound anybody to anything.
So here is the turn, and I want you to take it in a room with the curtains exactly as they are.
Right now, as you read this, there is a deposit in you that was laid down in front of witnesses and cannot be quietly reclaimed, and the flat year did not touch it. You are sealed, marked, paid down on, held. The written word says earnest and it says seal, and the Holy Spirit who is that deposit is stirring in you at this exact moment, whether or not your chest registers a single thing.
You have not lost your place. You lost a feeling, and a feeling was the one thing in this arrangement that was never load bearing. What He gave, He gave in metal on a table, in a bow He Himself watches, and in a Spirit He put inside you and then looked at.
Declare this over yourself
This footing is not something you generate on a flat afternoon. It is yours in Christ, given to you on the day a deposit was laid down inside you, and a quiet year does not withdraw it. So say these plainly and leave the outcome with Him, because when feeling returns, and how, is His to decide.
- Curtains half shut at noon, you are not a report on where God is. Scripture says He laid His own Spirit down in me the way coins are counted onto a table in front of witnesses, and metal on a table is not undone by weather. In the name of Jesus I read the sign He gave and not the feeling I lost.
- Suspicion that I made it all up, you have no claim to stay in this room. The Holy Spirit Himself is the deposit that was put down on me, and what is written stands whether or not I can feel the weight of it today. I am sealed, and the seal was never mine to keep hold of.
- God, You hung a bow in a cloud and said that You would look upon it, and You are the One doing the looking while I lie here feeling nothing at all. I am not asking You for an emotion to prove it to me. I am naming Your sign out loud and opening the curtains.
