The loft ladder still has paint on it from the year they did the hall. You go up for the Christmas things and come down with something else, because the box was in the way and the lid was not on properly, and there it was on a pile of school reports: a notebook with a green cover.
You know the year off the top of your head. That year.
You sit on the boards up there with the cold coming through your socks and you read it, and this is the part nobody warns you about. The handwriting is yours. Absolutely, unmistakably yours, the same loop on the letter g, the same slant. The ink is yours. The little drawing in the margin is yours. And the person is not.
Whoever wrote those pages was on fire. A full page about a Tuesday. Underlinings. Prayers written out, and then what they thought the answer was, in the same pen, without embarrassment, and a line thanking God for the weather. There is one sentence where they say they have never been so sure of anything.
You read it twice and then you sit there holding it and you cannot get back inside it. Not for a second. You try, in the way a person tries a door they know is locked, and there is nothing. Not doubt, exactly. Just a long flat quiet where the fire used to be, and the awful private conclusion that arrives with it: whatever that was, you have lost it, and losing it probably means it was never as real as it felt.
Come down the ladder. Leave the box open. Go and stand somewhere much older.
Wet ground everywhere, and the smell of everything that has been under water. A family standing on a hillside with mud to their ankles and no idea what to do first. An old man who has spent a year in the dark hearing rain on a roof he built himself.
And over his head, hung in the cloud, a curve of color. He did not put it there. He did not ask for it. He was not, as far as anybody can tell, feeling anything in particular at the moment it appeared.
And the One who hung it says something so strange that people skate past it for their whole lives: it is there so that when I look at it, I remember. Not so the man remembers. So God does.
That happened. Over real ground, over a real man with mud on him, and the sign went up into a sky where he could not reach it and could not take it down.

The sign was hung where you cannot reach it
Read who the bow is for. That is the whole hinge and it is right there in the sentence: I will look upon it, and I will remember. The most important sign ever hung in a sky was placed in the one location in the universe that does not depend on a human being's memory, mood, or spiritual weather on a given Tuesday.
We usually have this backwards. We treat a sign as something we produce and maintain: I felt it, therefore it is real, and I have stopped feeling it, so something has gone wrong with me. But nobody in that muddy family painted a rainbow. Nobody had to keep it up there.
Right now, as you read, you are standing under a sign you did not hang and cannot take down, and you were standing under it on every one of the flat gray days since that notebook was written. I am not offering you a comforting thought. Genesis 9:16 puts the bow where God looks rather than where the man feels, and the Holy Spirit is doing the work in you this minute of moving your assurance off your own weather and onto His.
What is under the building
There is another picture, and it is even quieter than the first one.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19
Picture the bottom stone of a wall. Set before anyone else arrives, cut with a mark, then covered over as the building goes up, so nobody sees it again for as long as the wall stands. And that buried stone is the reason the wall is still there in two hundred years.
The seal on it does not say: this person felt it strongly in the spring. It says the Lord knows them that are His. Knows. Present tense, His verb, His knowing, done in Him and not in you, and no page in a green notebook has ever been the evidence for it.
So this is yours whatever your handwriting from that year makes you feel: a foundation with God's own seal cut into it, holding up a life you are currently reading as a ruin. That is written, not sensed. 2 Timothy 2:19 says the foundation stands sure, and His Spirit is the one pressing that written line under your feet while you sit on cold loft boards.
Nobody is grading your memorable moments
Now let me take one weight off you that should never have been on you.
There is a quiet idea that goes around: the people who are really in this had a moment, a dateable, tell-it-at-the-front moment, and the rest are hoping. It was never true. Some came in through a night they will describe for fifty years. Some came in through a slow Tuesday and could not tell you the month. The bow was not hung more securely over the ones who wept.
And you do not have to reconstruct the year in the green notebook. You have a sign that was set where God looks, and you have it today, at whatever temperature you are running. The word says the foundation stands sure and the Lord knows His own, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to feel the way you felt then before He calls you what God calls you now.
There are terms here, and they are not what people assume. God's side is the sign, the seal, the knowing, the keeping, all settled and none of it up for review. Your side is to stop auditing yourself against your own back catalogue and start naming what He gave.
Here is the turn, and it happens up the ladder or down it, wherever you are.
You are not being asked to work your way back to a year you cannot re-enter. You are being told where your standing actually lives, and it does not live in the notebook. It lives in a sign hung where you cannot reach it and a seal cut where you cannot see it. 2 Timothy 2:19 is the written word for it, and the Holy Spirit is saying it into you now, on a flat day, at whatever hour this is, with the cold coming through your socks.
So put the notebook back in the box, and put the box back in the loft, and be kind to whoever wrote it. That was you. So is this. Neither of them is the sign, and the sign has not moved since before either of you was on fire.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking yourself back into an old year. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, given to you when God set His own seal on you, and it rests on His word with the Holy Spirit making it live as you say it. What He does in you next, and how it feels while He does it, is His to decide, and you speak anyway, because the sign is already in the sky.
- Notebook in the loft box, you are not the measure of what God has settled about me, and you never carried that authority. 2 Timothy 2:19 says the foundation of God stands sure with a seal on it, and a seal is cut once and holds for the life of the building. You are a green cover with good handwriting in it, and I am reading you as a photograph and not as a verdict.
- Verdict that I am a person who cools off, get out of this loft. In the name of Jesus I am putting you out of my own history, because a sign hung in a cloud does not consult my Tuesday. I am known by God on my flattest morning, and known is His word for it and not mine.
- God, You are the One who hangs a bow where only You can look at it, and You have set Your seal on me in exactly that way. Your word says You know those who are Yours, and Your Spirit is holding that steady in me while I sit here feeling nothing much at all. I am naming the sign today instead of auditing the feeling.
