The Photograph From That Sunday

This message is for there is one photograph from that Sunday and it is doing all the work of holding your faith together

It lives in the second drawer, under the tea towels, in a brown envelope that used to hold something else.

Four inches by six. The colors have gone the way prints go when they sit in a warm kitchen for nine years, so the whites have turned cream and everybody's skin has gone a soft orange, and the grass at the bottom of the frame is nearly gold.

It is the Sunday they went down to the water. Pauline is in the middle of it with her hair wet and her head back, laughing at something the man on her left has just said, and there are about thirty people around her, and somebody's arm is across her shoulders, and the whole photograph is one long noise. You can hear it looking at it.

She takes it out about once a month. More, in a bad season. She holds it under the kitchen light the way you check a pilot light, to see whether the small blue flame is still going.

Because something happened to her that day. She has never had the words for it, and the words always sound smaller than the thing anyway. She only knows that she went down to that river as one woman and came back up as another, and that for about six weeks afterwards she woke up in the morning already glad.

That was nine years ago.

And the feeling did not stay. Feelings do not, and nobody warned her, and no one has ever told her that this is normal rather than a fault. So without meaning to, over nine years, she has quietly reorganized her whole faith around a four by six in a drawer. The photograph has become the evidence. It is the receipt. It is the thing she reaches for at two in the morning when the accusation comes that none of it was ever real, and she holds it under the light and thinks, well, that happened, whatever else is true, that happened.

It is a great deal of weight for a piece of paper.

And you have one. It might not be a photograph. It might be a date written in the front of a Bible, a small stone off a beach, or simply a Sunday you can describe minute by minute. You know the object, and you know where it is kept.

And you know the arithmetic you have been doing for years: that the day was real, and the feeling has gone, and therefore something must have slipped.

If you have no such object at all, stay with me, because you are the reason I am glad to write this. What holds a person was never the object and never the day. That is not a consolation prize for people with poor memories. That is the whole design, and it is written into the oldest covenants there are.

The Photograph From That Sunday

Where God put the sign

After the water went down, a family came out of a boat onto a hillside that smelled of mud, and God made an oath about the whole earth, and He hung something in the sky over their heads.

Picture the scene rather than the doctrine. Wet grass. Light coming back. A man standing with his hand over his eyes, looking up at a bow of color laid across the cloud. And listen to the reason God gives for putting it there, because almost everybody remembers the picture and almost nobody remembers the sentence. He does not say, I have set this so that you will remember. He says: I will look upon it, and remember the everlasting covenant.

The sign was not hung where the people look. It was hung where God looks.

So take that in before we go further, because it moves the load off you tonight. You are held by a sign that was never placed inside your memory, and it does not dim when a feeling does: the bow in Genesis 9:16 is set in front of God's own eyes, and the Holy Spirit is not offering you that as a comforting image. He is telling you where the thing that holds you is actually kept.

A sign that runs longer than the people who saw it

Every covenant God cuts comes with something standing that outlives the day it was cut.

Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.Exodus 31:13

Three things sit in that verse and each one takes weight off a tired person.

A sign between me and you. Two parties, and the sign stands between them, which means it is not a private feeling inside one of them. Throughout your generations. It is built to outlast the ones who were there on the day, so a child born eighty years later stands under the same standing sign without ever having attended anything. And then the purpose clause, which is the tender one: that ye may know. The sign exists to keep the knowing steady. It was given by a God who knows exactly how memory behaves, and who did not leave the covenant resting on it.

So hear this where you are sitting with the envelope in your hand. You are inside something that carries its own sign, and the sign was put there by God to hold the knowing when your feelings are not holding anything: Exodus 31:13 says it stands between Him and you through generations, and the Holy Spirit is the One breathing on that sentence right now so it lands as your situation and not as ancient legislation.

What the sign over you actually is

Now let me say plainly what is standing over you, and I am not going to rule on anybody's tradition or hand you a ritual to perform. There is no exercise in this message that makes a covenant more yours.

The sign of the covenant you are inside is Christ's own blood, given once and never repeated, and the Holy Spirit placed in you as the seal on it. Scripture calls Him the earnest, which is a deposit paid down that guarantees everything still to come. Both of those are on God's side of the table. Neither of them is a mood. Neither of them was ever in the drawer under the tea towels.

That is the whole difference between a sign and a souvenir. A souvenir proves a day happened, and it fades in a warm kitchen. A sign stands between two parties and holds while nobody is looking at it.

And a covenant has terms, so let me be straight about them. What is settled is His oath, His blood, and His Spirit given as the seal, which is exactly what Ephesians 1:13 calls Him. What is yours is the answer: you live as one of His, out loud, in the open. You are not asked to reproduce the day at the river, and you were never asked to hold your own guarantee.

The breakthrough

So here is what we are doing before you get up, and it takes one minute.

You are going to move your weight. Off the day, off the feeling, off the four by six, and onto the thing God set where He looks. You are not less inside this covenant than you were nine years ago, and you never were: Exodus 31:13 makes the sign a standing thing between God and you through generations, and the Holy Spirit is pressing that under you tonight as the actual floor rather than a nice thought about ancient people.

Keep the photograph. Please keep it. Put it back in the envelope and love it for what it is, which is a good day God gave you and a real one. It simply does not have to hold anything up any more, and it was never strong enough to, and it has been doing the job of a sign for nine years because nobody told you there already was one.

Declare this over yourself

The standing to speak like this belongs to you in Christ, and it was given to you when He sealed you with His Spirit rather than on the day you felt something at a river. Exodus 31:13 is the ground under these lines, and the Holy Spirit makes a written sign into a living one, so the authority is His and not the strength of your recall. What He restores, and when, is His to decide, so say these and leave the outcome to Him in His own way.

  1. Photograph in the drawer, you are not what holds me up. You are a good day and I am glad of you, and Exodus 31:13 calls the sign a standing thing between God and me throughout my generations, which is older and steadier than the paper you are printed on. In the name of Jesus I take my weight off you tonight.
  2. Fear that I have lost it, you have no claim in this house. The sign was never set where I feel; it was set where God looks, and His word says He is the Lord who sanctifies me. I am kept by a sign on His side of the table, and it has not moved once since the day He put it there.
  3. My God, You set the sign where You are looking and not where I am feeling, and You have gone on looking at it through every year I could not feel a thing. Tonight I name the sign You gave instead of the feeling I lost, and I put my whole weight on what You are still looking at.
