There is one photograph and it is not a good one.
Somebody took it from too far back, so the faces are small, and whoever developed it let the whole top half go pale and gold in the afternoon light off the water. In the middle of it there is a person with wet hair flattened to their head, a towel round their shoulders that is plainly not their own towel, and a grin that looks more like relief than glory.
That is the entire archive. One photograph, in a drawer, under the spare keys and the guarantee for a washing machine that broke years ago.
And here is what is remembered of the day itself, honestly and in full: that the water was colder than expected, that the towel smelled of somebody else's washing powder, and that on the way home there was a bag of chips in the car and the windows steamed up. That is it. No lightning. No shaking. No sentence from heaven that split the afternoon open.
Everyone else seemed to have more. There was a woman at the front who cried the whole time, and a lad from the year below who came up out of that water like something had been lifted off him, and afterwards people said things like I will never forget that as long as I live, and the honest answer, even then, standing there dripping in a borrowed towel, was: forget what?
So it went in the drawer. And every few years it comes out, and it gets looked at, and something small and cold turns over.
You know that turn. It is not doubt exactly. It is an audit. You go looking for the feeling, and you cannot find the feeling, and so you go looking for whether anything actually took, and the only evidence you can locate is a badly composed photograph and a memory of chips.
And because the feeling has gone, you have started quietly treating the whole thing as unproven. Not out loud. You would never say it in a house group. But there is a room in you that has been running that audit for years, at three in the morning, in car parks, on the way back from funerals, and it always ends the same way: I do not remember, therefore I do not know.
Nobody ever told you where the sign was actually put. That is all this is. And once you have seen where it was put, the audit has nothing left to weigh.

The bow was hung where God looks
Start with the oldest sign in the book, because it settles the question of address before anyone gets emotional about it.
Rain has stopped. The world is soaked and steaming. A man is standing on wet ground with his family behind him, and God swears an oath about never doing that again, and then He hangs something in the sky as the sign of it. A bow, colored, enormous, in the cloud.
Now read what God says the bow is for.
When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature.Genesis 9:16
Read that again with your audit in mind. It does not say when you see it and remember. It says when I see it. The sign was hung facing the One who swore. It was hung where God looks.
That is where you were baptized too, and you were sealed in a direction you cannot see from here. This is not me being clever with an old story: Genesis 9:16 puts the sign in the sky and names who watches it, and the Holy Spirit is the One taking that arrangement and setting it over a drawer with a bad photograph in it.
The sign came after the counting, not before it
Here is the second thing, and it is the one that ends the argument.
There was a man who was counted righteous by God on a particular night, standing outside under stars, believing what God had said. Years went by. And then, later, well after the counting, he was given a sign, and Scripture is precise about what that sign was doing.
He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.Romans 4:11
A seal. Not a cause. Not a payment. A seal is the thing pressed on afterwards to say that what is inside was already true. The sign did not make him righteous. The sign said out loud, in the flesh, on the body, that God had already counted him so.
You have that order the right way round now, and you were never asked to generate the reality by feeling it hard enough on the day. Romans 4:11 calls a sign a seal on something already counted, and His Spirit is why that sentence has teeth in your kitchen this evening instead of sitting quietly in a commentary.
And a covenant does ask something of you, so let me be exact. God's part is the swearing and the sealing, and it is finished. Your part is to live as a sealed person: to stop auditing, to take Him at His word, to walk out of the drawer. That is a real response and it is asked of you. It is simply never the thing that made the seal valid.
You are inside this, and you were inside it on the day you were driving home with the windows steamed up and nothing in your chest but relief and vinegar. The absence of a memorable moment was never evidence of an absent covenant, and a person with no story to tell about their own day is not standing further out than the woman who cried at the front.
Right now, as you read, the seal is where it has always been, on what God counted, facing the One who swore it. His word says the sign is a seal on righteousness already reckoned, and the Holy Spirit is putting that into you as your own settled ground, not as a nice way to look at it.
So bring the audit to an end. Not by working up a feeling to replace the one you never had, and not by going back to do the day again properly. You do not have to manufacture anything. The bow is in the cloud and He is the One looking at it.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking yourself into something here. The right to speak like this belongs to you in Christ and was given to you along with the sign itself, and the Holy Spirit takes what is written and makes it live in your mouth rather than leaving it on a page. What He does as you speak is His to decide, in His own way, and the seal is not waiting on the result.
- Photograph in the drawer, you are evidence and you were never the seal. Scripture says the sign is a seal on righteousness God had already counted, so in the name of Jesus you go back to being a picture of a cold afternoon. What God counted, He counted, and the drawer has no vote.
- Suspicion that nothing took, you have run your last audit in this house. The Lord hung the bow where He looks and not where I remember, which means my memory was never the witness stand. I am sealed, and I am done searching my own recollection for proof.
- Father, You counted a man righteous under the stars and only gave the sign years later, so I know what order You work in. Your word says the seal follows the counting, and Your Spirit says it over me tonight in plain language. I am putting the photograph back in the drawer and standing on what You sealed.
