Backed By GodPsalm 124:2

The Decision Nobody Will Sign Off

This message is for a decision has landed on you that nobody else will put their name to, and it is yours whichever way it goes

Seven in the evening, and the building has gone quiet in that particular way a workplace goes quiet when everybody has managed to leave before you.

Two folders on the desk. One of them is the offer, which is real and decent and would end a great deal of worry by the end of the month. The other is the plan to hold on another year, which needs one good spring and a bank manager in a reasonable mood.

The lamp is on. The overhead lights are off because nobody bothered turning them on when the daylight went.

At the meeting on Tuesday, every single person said the same sentence in a slightly different arrangement of words. You know the shape of it best. You are closest to it. Whatever you decide, we are behind you. And every one of them meant it kindly, and not one of them wrote anything down, and not one of them put their initials anywhere near it, because when a thing goes wrong afterwards the initials are the only part anybody looks at.

So it is yours. Both ways. If the spring comes good, it was obvious. If it does not, it was your call.

You have been sitting here since half five moving one folder half an inch to the left and then half an inch back.

Now hold that lamp and that desk in your mind, and stand somewhere else for a minute.

A town gate in an old country, late in the day, the flat stones still warm. Two men standing in front of everyone who happens to be there, and one of them takes off his outer cloak and hands it across, and takes off his belt with everything hanging on it and hands that across too, and receives the other man's in return. Then they say the words out loud so the whole gate can hear: what is mine is yours, your trouble is my trouble, and whoever rises against you has risen against me.

It looks like a ceremony. It is not. It is the strongest legal instrument that country had, and after that afternoon neither of those men ever faced anything alone again, and every person leaning on the gate wall knew it.

Two generations later, in a doorway in that same town, a whole household stands together at the end of a bad season, and the old man starts a line and everybody answers it. If the Lord had not been on our side. They say out loud what would have happened, in front of each other, on purpose.

Nobody in that doorway is describing a feeling. They are naming who was standing in front of them.

The Decision Nobody Will Sign Off

What actually changes at a gate like that

Watch carefully what did and did not change when those two men swapped belts, because it is the whole difference between a nice thought and something you can put weight on.

Their circumstances did not change. The harvest was still the harvest. The debts were still on the books. Neither man got a promise about how anything would turn out.

What changed was who was standing in front of it. From that hour, anything that came at one of them was coming at two, and the second one had his own reputation, his own household, his own strength and his own honor in the fight. Nobody asks a man in that arrangement to be stronger. He is not stronger. He is backed, which is a different word entirely.

So put that on your seven o'clock desk, because it is yours already and not on approval. You are not the whole of the strength standing in front of this decision. Psalm 124:2 is the doorway line, the one the household says out loud, and Scripture puts it exactly this way: if it had not been the Lord who was on our side when men rose up against us. His Spirit is the One pressing that plain sentence into a room where everybody else stopped short of writing their initials.

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us.Psalm 124:2

Say it slowly. Not a wish. A recital. The household is not asking for backing, they are reporting it, and they are reporting it out loud in each other's hearing because a thing said out loud stops being a private hope.

And you are in that doorway tonight, whether or not one other person in your life has offered to stand in it with you. Scripture never handed that line to heroes. It handed it to a household at the end of a bad season, and the Spirit is the One who lifts it off a page written for them and lays it across a desk with two folders on it.

Backed is not the same as told what to do

Here is where a lot of decent people quietly give up on this, so let me say it plainly.

Being backed does not mean the folder gets picked for you. You will still make the call. You will still weigh the spring and the bank and the five people whose hours depend on it, and you will still do it with less information than you would like, because that is what a decision is. Nothing in covenant removes the weight of judgment from a person. It removes the aloneness from underneath the judgment, which is not the same thing and is a great deal better than it sounds.

The reason it is better is this. What has been crushing you since Tuesday is not actually the arithmetic. It is the picture of yourself standing in front of the consequences on your own with nobody's name beside yours.

That picture is out of date, and I want to hand you the current one. Right now, as you read, you are inside an arrangement where Another has already put His whole strength in front of what you are facing. That is not encouragement. It is written into what God swore, it was sealed by Christ and never by your competence, and the Holy Spirit is the One making it a fact about tonight rather than about a country with warm flat stones.

I will not tell you which folder to pick and I will not tell you how it lands. The outcome is not mine to promise and it was never yours to guarantee either. What has changed is who is in front of it with you, and that changes how a man sits at a desk at seven in the evening.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it happens right where you sit rather than somewhere you have to travel to.

Stop trying to feel braver about the folders. Bravery is not the missing part and never was.

You have a covenant standing over this desk, and in it God's own strength is what is in front of the thing you have been facing since Tuesday. His word says He is on your side, His Spirit is the One putting that where your hands are, and no part of it is waiting for you to be more equal to the decision than you are. That is not a promise about the spring. It is a fact about who is standing there.

And this is why the household said it out loud. Something happens when a person stops carrying a thing silently and names it in the open along with who is backing them. It does not change the arithmetic on the desk. It changes the man at the desk, and the man at the desk is the one who has been the problem all week. You have His word for this and you have His Spirit pressing it in, so say it somewhere you can hear yourself say it.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into confidence here. The authority to speak like this belongs to you in Christ, it was given to you when He put His own name beside yours, and it rests on His standing rather than on how the decision turns out, and Scripture and His Spirit are what put weight on a sentence like this. Which folder brings which season, and how any of it lands, is His to decide, and you can leave the outcome exactly there. So speak these the way that old man in the doorway started his line, plainly, out loud, in your own hearing.

  1. Two folders on this desk, you do not get to make me face this alone. You are a decision and not a verdict on my life, and the Lord is on my side while I make you. He was on the side of a household who said so out loud in a doorway, and He has not changed His arrangements since.
  2. Fear that this is mine alone, get off my shoulders. In the name of Jesus I put you where you belong, because covenant means what comes at me has come at Him, and no one in that arrangement stands by himself. I am backed, and backed is not the same as brave.
  3. Lord, You are the One standing in front of this, and Your strength is not on loan to me for the evening. I am naming this decision out loud in Your hearing instead of moving it half an inch across a desk. Whatever spring comes, You are on my side, and I make this call as a man who is not on his own.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
