The porch swing had one chain longer than the other, so it always hung a little crooked, and she had never got round to fixing it in nine years of sitting there.
She had her phone in her lap and she was writing to her sister. She got out one line, read it back, and heard how it sounded. She deleted it. She tried again with different words, softer at the front, and read that back too, and it was worse: now it sounded like a woman fishing for sympathy about a thing that any reasonable person would deal with on a Tuesday afternoon. Delete. Third time she went plain and factual, just the bare shape of it with no feeling attached, and the bare shape of it took up one line and a half and looked, sitting there on the screen in the dark, like absolutely nothing.
She put the phone face down on the swing beside her.
That is what she could not get across. Not the facts. The facts were small. The facts would fit on a postcard and anyone reading them would nod politely and wonder what she was making such heavy weather of. It was the weight of the thing, the way it sat on her chest at four in the morning, the way it had quietly rearranged what she thought about herself, and there is no sentence in the English language that carries weight across from one person to another. Weight does not travel. Only words travel, and words kept coming out light.
So she stood up and walked down through the wet grass to the edge of the pasture, where the ground drops off and a gray shelf of rock comes up out of the field like the corner of something enormous buried underneath. She had leaned on that rock since she was nine years old. She put her back against it and let it take her weight and stood there in the dark.
And here is the thing she noticed, and it is the reason you are reading this.
The rock did not need it explained.
Now put yourself on that swing, because you have your own version and you know exactly which one it is. There is something coming at you right now that you have not been able to tell one living soul, not because it is shameful and not because it is secret, but because every time you have opened your mouth to try it has come out sounding smaller than it is, and you have watched a kind person's face and seen them wondering whether it is really as bad as all that, and you have thought: I would rather carry it than explain it badly.
You have been standing in front of this thing on your own. Not because nobody offered. Because you could not hand it over in a form anybody could receive.
There is a house standing behind you that never asked for a description.

What happened at the gate of the town
Picture the entrance of an old walled town at the end of the morning. Not a courtroom. A wide shaded arch in the wall with stone benches down both sides, where the elders of the place sat to hear whatever came in off the road.
A man with a case brings it there, and here is the part that decided everything: he does not win it by arguing well. He wins it by who stands up when his name is called. If he has a household behind him, if there are men on those benches whose interests are tied to his, the matter is answered before he finishes speaking. If he stands there alone, he can be entirely in the right and still walk home with nothing.
That is the world into which two houses would cut covenant with each other. From the day of the cutting, they were not two households any more, they were one, and everything that belonged to the stronger one now stood behind the weaker one. The smaller man did not have to become impressive. He did not have to argue better. He simply stopped appearing alone, and everyone at that gate could see it.
You are not standing in front of your thing alone, and you were not standing alone last night either when it felt exactly as though you were. That is not encouragement I invented for you: Scripture is where the covenant is recorded and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old arrangement at an old gate and makes it your actual position this morning.
A rock does not need the weather described to it
David spent years in country where the rock was not a metaphor. He knew what it was to get behind a shelf of stone with a wind coming and feel the whole enormous mass of the hill take the weather off him.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.Psalm 18:2
Look at what he reaches for. Not one word about explaining anything. Every single item on that list is a thing that does its work without a briefing. A rock does not need to be persuaded the wind is serious. A fortress does not require you to establish that the situation warrants a fortress. A high tower does not ask you to justify the height.
This is what has been quietly killing you: the belief that before you can be helped you have to make the case, and you cannot make the case, because the case sounds thin in words.
You have never once had to make the case. Psalm 18:2 does not have a single condition in it about how well the trouble is described, and His Spirit is not standing at a desk waiting for you to file it properly. The rock is already under your shoulder blades.
What actually changes, and what does not
Be careful here, because this is where a lot of writing about God gets dishonest, and I will not do that to you.
Nothing here tells you how this ends. Nobody on this page knows whether the thing coming at you turns aside next month or sits in your life for years. God does not hand out that information as a reward for reading something, and any voice that promises you the outcome is selling you a feeling.
What changes is who is standing in front of it.
That is not a smaller thing than an outcome. It is a bigger one, and you will understand it the first time you notice you are not bracing. The weight that was on your chest at four in the morning was never mostly the thing itself. It was the arithmetic of doing it alone. Take out the alone and the same facts weigh a completely different amount.
You are in covenant, which means the strength of the other house is now the strength of yours, and it was so before you understood a word of it. His word ties His name to your case, and the Spirit is not describing that to you as a doctrine. He is setting you inside it as your address.
And here is the part that is yours, because covenant does have terms. God's part is the standing and He has already taken it and cannot resign from it. Your part is to stop stepping out in front of it. To let the rock take the weight, which sounds easy and is the single hardest thing in this article.
Come off the swing.
The thing you cannot name to anybody: bring it, unexplained, in the shape it is actually in. You do not have to make it sound bigger and you do not have to make it sound reasonable. You are not applying. You are already inside an arrangement where your case is answered by a name that is not yours, and the answering does not wait on your account of the facts. That is what Psalm 18:2 is doing in your Bible, and the Holy Spirit is putting it in your hands tonight, not as poetry, as position.
So say the thing. Badly, if badly is what you have. One line and a half of bare facts is enough, because you are not persuading anybody. There is nobody to persuade. The rock came up out of the field long before you got there.
And then say who is standing in front of it, out loud, so that your own ears hear it in your own voice. That is the whole exchange: a thing nobody could be made to understand, handed over to Someone who never asked for the description.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these because covenant put another house's strength in front of yours, and in Christ that standing was given to you rather than built by you. Scripture hands you the words and the Holy Spirit carries the weight of them. How God answers what is coming at you is His to decide, in His own way and in His own timing, and nothing here pretends otherwise.
- Message I deleted three times, you are not the measure of this and you never were. Scripture calls my God a rock and a fortress and a high tower, and a tower has never once asked to have the wind described to it. I hand you over tonight and I stop carrying you alone, in the name of Jesus.
- Suspicion that I am making a fuss over nothing, you have no standing in this house and no say in what I bring to God. I am in covenant with the One who counts the hairs on my head and does not grade the size of what I bring Him. I bring the whole thing, and I bring it plainly.
- Lord, You are my rock and my fortress and my high tower, and You have never once required a briefing before You stood. You do not tell me how this ends and I am not asking You to, because the outcome is Yours and the standing is mine. I am walking down to the edge of the pasture and leaning my whole weight on You.
