The Step You Think You Missed

This message is for you keep thinking there is one step everybody else was told about and nobody told you

By the middle of that morning the courtyard was so full that people were standing on the low wall to see over the heads in front.

It had started as noise. Then it had become argument, then a kind of stunned silence, and now a man was talking from the top of a flight of stone steps with the sun climbing behind him. He was not polished. He had a fisherman's voice, too loud for the space, and he was saying things about Jesus of Nazareth that landed on that crowd like a hand on the chest.

And then somebody shouted the question. Not a clever one. Not a theological one. Just a man's voice from somewhere near the back, cracked open with urgency: what shall we do?

Half that courtyard was asking it by then. Traders who had come in for the week. Grandmothers. Men with dust to the knee from three days on the road. People who had heard the whole thing in a second language and understood every word anyway.

Here is what the man on the steps did not do. He did not lower his voice and give the good part to the front row. He did not say there was a list to be worked through, or a period of proving, or a private word for the ones who had been around longer.

He told them what to do, plainly, in one sentence. And then he told them who it was for, and it is the widest sentence in the entire book. The promise is for you. And for your children. And for everyone far off, as many as the Lord our God calls.

Count the rings in that. For you: the people actually standing in the courtyard. For your children: people not yet born, not consulted, not present. For everyone far off: not in the city, not in the country, not in the century.

Now. You have been standing at the back of that courtyard for years.

Not doubting, exactly. Believing, mostly. Turning up, giving, praying at traffic lights, meaning it. But underneath all of it there has been a low and constant hum that goes something like this: everybody else got told something. There was a step. A prayer with particular words in it, a moment at a camp, a Tuesday evening, a conversation in a car, and they can all name theirs and you cannot name yours, and so you have been living as a person with a suspected gap in their paperwork.

You have never asked anybody. Of course you have not. The question is too exposing at this stage, because the longer you leave it the more it would cost to say out loud. So you have carried it quietly, for a decade or two, into every service and every song, and it sits at the back of you like a stone in a shoe you have decided not to stop and shake out.

That is the thing this message has come for. Not your knowledge. The stone.

The Step You Think You Missed

The sentence was shouted, not whispered

Everything you need to see is in how public that morning was.

A covenant, in that world, was not arranged privately and then explained to the participants afterwards. It was sworn out loud, in front of witnesses, in the open, precisely so that nobody could later claim they had been kept out of the room. The whole point of doing it in a courtyard is that a courtyard has no back office.

And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.Acts 2:39

Read the last ring again: everyone whom the Lord our God calls. That is not a narrowing clause hiding at the end. It is the widest thing in the sentence, and it hands the calling to God rather than to your ability to remember a date.

You are inside a promise that was said at volume, in daylight, with the far-off explicitly named. I am not adding anything to it: Acts 2:39 does that naming itself, and the Holy Spirit, who is the gift promised in that very verse, is the One who has carried the sentence across two thousand years to land in front of you this evening.

Why there is no secret step

Think about what the missing-step theory actually requires. It requires God to have run a covenant the way a company runs an onboarding process, with a form you did not receive, and then to hold the omission against you for twenty years while you sang in His house every week.

That is not the God in that courtyard, and it is not the shape of any covenant in the book. An oath is sworn by one party and received by the other. That is the whole architecture. There is a swearing and there is a receiving, and the receiving is a hand opening rather than a code being entered.

So when you go hunting for the step, you are searching for something that would have to exist for the arrangement to be a bargain. It is not a bargain. Nobody negotiated with God on the day the pieces were laid out and the fire went down the lane alone, and nobody has since.

You have been carrying a question that the text answers out loud, and you were named in the answer before you started carrying it. His word says the promise reaches everyone the Lord calls, and the Holy Spirit has been doing that calling in you for far longer than you have been auditing yourself for the missing form.

And there is something asked of you, because a covenant has terms and I will not leave you thinking otherwise. God's side is the oath, the promise and the calling, and all three are finished. Your side is to receive it out loud and live like somebody inside it. That is real. It is also the smallest thing you will do today.

The breakthrough

You are not outside this waiting for clearance. There is no queue, no assessment, no clause about people who cannot produce a date, and nobody in that courtyard was asked to prove how long they had been listening.

Right now, as you read, the promise that was shouted from the top of those steps has your name in its widest ring, and the calling in it has been God's work and not your recall. Scripture says the promise is for all who are far off, everyone the Lord calls, and the Holy Spirit is putting that into you at this moment as your own possession rather than as somebody else's good news.

So stop looking for the step. There is no step. There is a door standing open in a courtyard full of noise, and you have been standing in front of it explaining that you may have missed the instructions.

Walk in. Not later, when you feel more qualified. Nobody in that courtyard felt qualified, and every single one of them was in by lunchtime.

Declare this over yourself

The right to speak like this is not something you achieve tonight. It belongs to you in Christ, given to you with the promise itself, and the Holy Spirit takes what is written and makes it live in your mouth instead of leaving it in a page of history. What He does as you speak is His to decide, in His timing, and the door does not close while He decides.

  1. Step I think I missed, you are a rumor and you are not the door. Scripture says the promise is for everyone far off, as many as the Lord calls, so in the name of Jesus you stop running my paperwork. The calling was God's work, and I am walking in on it.
  2. Feeling of being the one nobody told, you have no claim to stay in this house. The promise was shouted in a courtyard in daylight, not handed round quietly at the front, and a covenant sworn in the open has no back office to be excluded from. I am in the room, and I am speaking at normal volume.
  3. Holy Spirit, You are the gift named in the same breath as the promise, which means You were never the reward for finding the step. Your word puts me in the widest ring of that sentence, and You have been calling me since long before I started looking for the form. I am Yours, out loud, tonight, and I am not waiting to feel qualified.
