Kindness Through AnotherActs 27:24

The Whole Street Came On

This message is for to understand, standing at a kitchen window before dawn while the lights come back on for somebody else's sake, that covenant kindness reaches her because of Christ and not because of her record

The power went off along the whole terrace at about nine in the evening, and by midnight everybody had accepted it. Candles found. Freezers left shut. Somebody's radio going on batteries through an open window. The street settled into that odd holiday feeling a power cut gives a place before anybody gets cold.

Then, at about two, the vans came. Four of them, and floodlights, and a generator, and men in hi vis standing in a hole in the road that had not existed at teatime.

The woman at number twelve stood at her kitchen window with a cup of tea she had made on a camping stove and watched them work. She knew perfectly well what her street was worth to anybody. Nothing had ever been fixed here overnight in her life. Potholes waited months. The lamp post outside her gate had been dark since the spring.

Her neighbor came out for a look and told her why. Number nineteen. The little one at nineteen is on a ventilator at home, and there is a machine that has to run, and the battery on it does not last the night.

At four in the morning the lights came on down the whole terrace at once, every window, all the way to the corner. Her hallway light. Her fridge starting up again with a shudder. The dark lamp post outside her gate, on for the first time since March.

And she stood there in the sudden light, and the thought that arrived in her, unbidden and unwelcome, was: none of this came for me.

And you know that thought, because you have had it in a room where good things were happening. You are not bitter. You would not begrudge anybody anything. You simply have a settled, quiet, decades old conviction that whatever God does for other people, He has no particular reason to do for you.

The Whole Street Came On

The thought that arrives in the light

Let me name the weight first, because this one hides well.

It does not look like unbelief. It looks like modesty. It looks like a person who does not push in, does not presume, does not make a fuss. And underneath it is a piece of arithmetic that has been running so long it feels like humility: other people have something about them that makes God's kindness make sense, and you do not, so when it lands near you it must have been traveling toward somebody else.

That arithmetic is about to be shown up by a boat.

Paul is a prisoner on a grain ship in a storm that has been running for two weeks. Nobody has eaten. The cargo has gone over the side. Two hundred and seventy six people are on that ship, and every one of them expects to drown before morning. Then Paul stands up in the middle of them and says this.

Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.Acts 27:24

Granted you all those who sail with you. Read it again and notice who the sentence is spoken to and who it is about. God's word came for Paul. And the whole ship lives.

You are looking at how covenant kindness actually travels, and it does not travel to the deserving one by one. Acts 27:24 shows a word given to one man and cashed out on two hundred and seventy five others who never got a word of their own, and the Spirit who sent that messenger in the night is the same Spirit teaching you to read your own position on that deck correctly.

Nobody on that ship was a passenger by charity

Here is what could go wrong at this point, so let me stop it.

If you hear that and conclude the word for you is hanger on, tolerated near somebody else's blessing, then the sentence went past without landing. Not one of those sailors was standing about on the edge of Paul's rescue looking grateful and slightly awkward. They were the rescue. God did not save Paul and permit the rest to survive as an overspill. God said, I have granted you all of them, and the granting was the point of the sentence.

There is no such thing as a charity case in a covenant, because a covenant does not deal with individuals on their merits. It deals with a head and everybody in him.

As by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.Romans 5:19

That is the whole mechanism, and every one of us already lives under half of it without complaining about the arrangement. Nobody argues that they should have been assessed separately in Adam. You are inside the second half of that verse on exactly the same terms as the first, and Romans 5:19 says so, and the Holy Spirit does not seat people in Christ by grade.

Which means the question changes

The question was never whether God has a reason for you. He has one, and it is not a small one, and it is not about you.

Ask a person on that street why their fridge is running and the honest answer is a name and a house number. Ask a person in Christ why the kindness reached them and the honest answer is also a name, and saying it out loud is not humiliating, it is the most solid ground there is. A reason that depends on my record can be revised. A reason that depends on His cannot.

You have a place inside a covenant whose whole weight rests on somebody who has never once failed at anything, and that is written into what Christ did rather than into what you manage this week. His Spirit is the one who joined you to Him, and the joining is what makes the kindness yours rather than overheard.

And there is no ranking in it. Nobody at that table has more reason than anybody else, because everybody at it has the same reason, and His name is the only one on the paperwork.

The breakthrough

The lights are on in your house. They have been on for some time.

What is left is to say out loud whose name did that, and to stop apologizing for the answer. Jesus set the whole requirement at the size of a seed and then put every ounce of the weight on the mouth, because a mountain does not shift for something you merely conclude in a kitchen (Mark 11:23). The Spirit carries a spoken thing where a private one never goes.

So speak. Not to persuade God. To stop negotiating with yourself in the dark.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing. The right to speak like this belongs to you in Christ, given for the sake of Another and never issued against your record, so nobody who ranks people gets a say in it. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them living rather than merely tidy. How He works this out in your street and your week is His to decide.

  1. Record I keep bringing to the door, you are not what opened this. Paul stood on a deck in a storm and was told that God had granted him every soul on that ship, and not one of those men had earned a place on the list. In the name of Jesus I stop presenting my case at a door that is already open.
  2. Suspicion that God has no reason for me, you have nowhere left to stand. Romans 5:19 says that through one man's obedience the many are made righteous, and many is a word that reaches all the way to the back of the boat where the Holy Spirit has already seated me. I am saying His name out loud as my reason.
  3. Lord, You are the reason and You have always been the reason, and there has never been a second one hiding underneath it. I thank You, because Your Spirit put me inside You rather than beside You. I am here for Your sake, and so is every other person at this table.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
