Kindness Through Another2 Samuel 9:1

The Reason You Think You Are Skipped

This message is for you have a reason in your head for why God does things for other people and not for you, and you have never said it out loud

The town is at the end of a road that stops being a road about a mile before you get there.

It is the sort of place people name when they mean nowhere. Dry ground, a well that is hard work, a handful of houses, and one of them belongs to a man who took in somebody else's son years ago and never made a fuss about it.

The son is grown now, in his thirties. He cannot walk properly and has not been able to since he was five, and the story of how it happened is the story of the worst day his family ever had. He does not tell it. He lives quietly in a house that is not his own, in a town at the end of a road, and he has built a whole life out of not being noticed, because in his experience being noticed by important people has never once gone well for his family.

Then, one afternoon, horses in the lane.

You know that sound. Not literally, but you know it. The sound of official attention arriving at a house that has spent years being careful. He would have known exactly what it meant, and what it meant was: they have finally got round to us.

He is taken to a palace. He goes in on other people's arms. He gets himself onto the floor in front of the throne, face down, and he says the thing you say when you are counting on nothing: I am your servant, and I am a dead dog. That is not humility. That is a man getting his own verdict in first, because being the one who says it hurts less than hearing it.

And the king says his name. Then the king says: do not be afraid. I am going to show you kindness for the sake of your father, and I am giving you back everything that was your grandfather's, and you will eat at my table from now on. Every day. Like one of my sons.

Now watch, because everything is in this next second.

The man on the floor is not being rewarded. He has done nothing. He has no case, no achievement, nothing anyone could put on a form. He is also not being pitied, and that matters enormously, because pity would have sent food to the house at the end of the road and left him in it.

He is being brought in because years earlier, before he was born, the king and his father cut a covenant with each other and swore kindness to each other's households for ever. The king has spent the morning asking whether anyone is left of that house so that he can keep his word. The man is not the reason. His father's name is the reason. And that turns out to be a far stronger thing to be included by than anything he could have brought himself.

You have a reason in your head for why God does things for other people and not for you. You have had it a long time. You have never once said it out loud, because saying it out loud would make it real, and because some part of you suspects it is simply true.

It is not the reason. It was never even in the conversation.

The Reason You Think You Are Skipped

The question the king actually asked

Everything turns on the wording of one sentence, and the sentence is written down.

And David said, "Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?"2 Samuel 9:1

Read what he is not asking. He is not asking who deserves it. He is not asking who has been loyal, who has kept in touch, who has behaved well since the trouble. He is asking whether anyone is left, and the whole engine of the sentence is at the end: for Jonathan's sake.

That is how covenant kindness travels. It comes to one person for the sake of another, and it arrives at addresses that had no claim of their own, because the claim was never theirs. It belonged to the name it came in.

You are included for a reason that has nothing to do with your record, and you were included before you had a chance to spoil it. I am not softening anything for you here: 2 Samuel 9:1 has a king searching for someone specifically in order to keep a promise made to somebody else, and the Holy Spirit is putting that search on your street.

The reason you have never said out loud

Let us take the private sentence out and look at it in daylight, because it loses most of its power in daylight.

It usually sounds like one of these. Because of what I did when I was nineteen. Because I do not really believe properly, not like they do. Because my family is what it is. Because I never got past the thing that happened when I was five. Because I have asked before and nothing came, so evidently there is something about me.

Every one of those is an argument about your own qualifications. And every one of them is answered by a sentence that never mentions you. Ephesians 4:32 says God in Christ forgave you, and the load-bearing words there are in Christ, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to feel more qualified before that starts applying.

The man on the palace floor got there first with his own verdict. He said dead dog before anyone else could. And the king did not argue with his self-assessment; he simply went past it, because it had never been the deciding factor at any point in the conversation.

Nobody at that table is there on merit

Here is the part that keeps this from being charity, and it is the part people miss.

You are comparing yourself with the ones you think are in properly. The people you assume God does things for. And they are inside it on exactly the same terms you are, for the sake of the same name, with the same absence of qualifications. Nobody at that table is there on merit. The difference between you and them is not standing. It is that somebody once told them whose name they came in on. Romans 3:23 flattens the entire comparison in half a line, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes the league table out of a person's head and leaves them with a chair instead.

That is why this is not a handout. A handout leaves you outside with something in your hands. This puts you at the table as a son, permanently, with a place that is set whether you feel worthy of it that day or not, and it does it in front of the household, so it cannot be quietly reversed later.

There are terms, and they are worth saying plainly. What is settled is His: the oath, the name, the kindness, the place. What is yours is to come when you are called, and to stop arguing the case you were never asked to make. That division is written down rather than invented by me, and the Holy Spirit is the One who keeps it from curdling back into a burden.

The breakthrough

So say it, and then say the other thing.

Your reason is not a ruling. You are in for the sake of a name that is not yours, and you were in before the reason was ever formed. That is not my encouragement; 2 Samuel 9:1 shows kindness moving toward a household on the strength of somebody else's name, and the Holy Spirit is the One turning an old summons into your own.

The kindness is not coming because your case improved. It is coming because Jesus is who He is, and God keeps His word about Him, and you are the one it lands on. That is the entire mechanism, and it is far more solid than the version where it depends on you.

Declare this over yourself

Do not tidy yourself up first. This right is yours in Christ, given to you on the strength of His name rather than your record, and Scripture is the ground under every word with the Holy Spirit making it live as you speak. What He does about the things you have been asking for is His to decide, in His own way, and you speak now, because the search was already carried out and you were already found.

  1. Reason I have carried since I was small, you are a sentence and not a ruling. 2 Samuel 9:1 has a king asking only whether anyone is left, never whether they deserved to be, so you do not get to sit at the bottom of every good thing telling me why it went to somebody else. Get off the floor of my house, because the summons already came up the lane.
  2. Fear of being the one God skips, you are evicted in the name of Jesus, and you can take the four words I have never said out loud with you. I was never included because my case was strong; I am included because His name is, and that is a better foundation than anything I could have built. I am done getting my own verdict in first.
  3. Jesus, You are the name I come in on, and by Your Spirit You are keeping a place set for me that my record never had any say over. I am not asking You to overlook me kindly; I am taking the chair that Your Father set out for Your sake. Whatever You do next about the things I have been asking for is Yours to decide, and I am at the table either way.
