The Word On The Spine

This message is for the word testament has been printed on the spine of your Bible your whole life and you never once asked what it meant

The hallway lamp had a brass pull chain that took two tries, and the second try always worked, and the light it gave was the color of weak tea.

Under it, on the third shelf down, lay a Bible so old the leather had gone soft as cloth at the corners. He was seven. He could not read the small print inside, but he could read the spine, because those letters were tall and gold and half rubbed away, and one of them had a groove in it he liked to run his thumbnail along, back and forth, the way you worry a loose tooth.

He asked, once. His grandmother was drying a pan.

"It means the new part," she said. "The old part is at the front. The new part is at the back."

He nodded, because that was an answer, and because he was seven, and because at seven the answer of a woman drying a pan is the answer of God.

Twenty-six years went past. The lamp went to a cousin. The Bible came to him, and it sits now on a shelf in a flat with better lighting, and the word is still on the spine, and he has still never asked. He has heard it in three hundred sermons. He has read the promises printed underneath it and found them warm and found them distant.

And here is the thing nobody says out loud in a room full of believers: he is not unusual. He is normal. Most of the people beside him could not define it either, and none of them will say so, because the word arrives in a person's life at about the age of four, wearing the clothes of something everybody already understands.

You know how this goes, because it is your shelf. There is a word you have walked past for thirty years. Nobody withheld it from you. Nobody tested you on it. It was simply handed to you as furniture, and furniture is the one thing in a house you stop seeing.

So let me not define it. Let me take you out to the field where it happened, and you can watch, and you can tell me afterwards what you saw.

The Word On The Spine

A lane of bare ground, and only one walker

An old man is told to bring animals out to open country. He does. He kills them cleanly and he cuts them down the middle, and he lays the halves in two rows facing each other, with a lane of bare ground running down the middle, wide enough for a man to walk.

Then he waits. Birds come down all afternoon and he goes up and down beating them off with his arms. The sun gets low and orange and then it goes, and the man falls into a deep and heavy sleep, and a darkness comes down over him.

And in the dark, something moves. A smoking firepot and a burning torch go down the lane between the pieces, from one end to the other, slowly, and the light of it goes across the halves on both sides.

One walker. Not two.

That matters more than anything else in the field, because in that country two men swore this way, and both of them walked the lane. Walking it was the sentence. It said, without a word: if I break faith with you, let happen to me what happened to these. The lane was where a man put his own life down as the collateral of his own word. Nobody signed anything. There was no paper anywhere in that field.

And the man who was promised everything that night is unconscious in the grass on the edge of it, and God walks the lane by Himself, and walks it for both of them.

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.Genesis 15:17

You are inside an oath that was sworn while one of the two parties was asleep, and you were inside it long before you had a word for it. I am not laying a nice idea over your evening. Genesis 15:17 puts the fire in that lane on its own, and the Holy Spirit takes that field, which happened once, in a place, with a real man's real hands, and He sets it down under your feet as ground you are standing on right now.

What the word on your spine is actually saying

Now you can have the word, and it will not be a key and it will not be a secret. Testament is simply an older English word for a covenant, and a covenant is that field. Not an agreement. Not two parties finding terms they can both live with. An oath, sworn by one, at the cost of one, and binding because of who swore it.

So the thing on your shelf is not labeled the way you thought. Scripture calls what you have been holding an oath, and the Spirit of God does not hand you that as a fact to file. He hands it to you as an address, with your own name on the outside.

Feel the weight change. A sentiment can be withdrawn without anybody breaking anything, because a sentiment was never binding in the first place. That is why the promises have felt warm and far away. You have been reading clauses of a sworn oath in the tone of voice you would use for a get well card.

Blood that is still speaking

There is a second field, and it is the one the whole shelf is named after.

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.Hebrews 12:24

Speaketh. Present tense. Not spoke, once, a long way back, and then went quiet.

Blood in these fields never means violence and it never means horror. It means this cannot be undone. It is the loudest way the ancient world knew to say a thing is now permanent, the way we might say a door is welded rather than closed. Abel's blood cried out of the ground for justice and it was right to cry. This blood says something better, and the better thing it says is your standing, and it has not stopped saying it for one second since.

You have a voice speaking for you that never runs out of breath. Hebrews 12:24 says it speaks, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to picture that as poetry. He is telling you what is happening in the room you are sitting in tonight.

The sentence you have been reading as a sentiment

Go and find one. You know the one. It is the sentence somebody wrote in the front of a card for you, or the one that came up on a screen at a funeral, which you always liked and never once leaned on.

Maybe it is this: I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

You read that as kindness. It is not kindness. It is a clause. It was said by the One who walked the lane alone, and it is held up by the same thing that held up the fire in the dark, which is His own life staked on His own word.

Right now, as you read, that sentence stops being a sentiment and goes back to being a clause. It is written, and written words inside an oath are not decoration; the Spirit who breathed them through a man's hand is breathing them over your evening while you sit there with your shoes off.

The breakthrough

You were not asked to walk the lane. It is the actual shape of what happened in Genesis 15:17. You have a covenant, and you did not negotiate it, and you cannot lose it by failing to understand it, because it was never resting on your understanding in the first place.

Tonight is not a lesson finishing. It is a person finding out which side of the field they were standing on the whole time. The Holy Spirit is not informing you now; He is seating you, on the strength of what is written and not on the strength of how much of it you can explain.

Nothing is asked of you tonight except this: answer. That is your part and it always was. The oath is His and the answering is yours.

Declare this over yourself

You have the right to speak like this because it is yours in Christ, given to you and not achieved by you, and the words below are not a technique. They are the answering. What He does with them, and when, and how it looks in your week, is His to decide; the outcome is His and it always has been. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit is the breath in them.

  1. Promise I have read as a kind sentiment, you are an oath and you were sworn in my hearing. Hebrews 12:24 says that blood is still speaking, so you are not a warm feeling I keep on a shelf, you are a clause I live inside. In the name of Jesus, I take you at the weight you were written at.
  2. Quiet shame of the unasked question, you have no claim to stay in this house. I was never disqualified for not knowing; the fire walked the lane while the man it was promised to lay asleep in the grass. God has settled this, and I stop apologizing for arriving late to my own inheritance.
  3. Lord, You walked between the pieces alone and You have never once asked me to walk them. So I say what I now see: I belong to a covenant You swore at Your own cost, and tonight I read Your promises the way You wrote them.
