Sealed In BloodPsalm 89:34

The Handshake That Did Not Hold

This message is for a man shook your hand on something and did not keep it, and now every promise sounds like the same weather

The lot behind the sale barn on Route 9 is gravel and standing water, and by the middle of October it goes the color of dishwater. Merle Hobbs backed his truck to the fence line and dropped the tailgate and sat on it, and the two of them worked it out the way men there had worked things out for sixty years. Forty acres of hay ground. Three seasons. A price, said once, and written down nowhere.

Then Merle put out his hand.

It was a good handshake. Dry, hard, unhurried, the kind that means a man has decided. He said, "We don't need paper between us," and it landed like a compliment, because it was one. You went home and told your wife at the sink and she laughed and said, Merle Hobbs, well, there you go. You bought seed on it. You had the old sickle bar mower gone through in November because June was coming, and you paid a fellow in Ashland ninety dollars to true up the reel, and you were glad to.

In February you drove past on the way to the co op and somebody else's equipment was sitting on the forty. Blue, where yours is green. Two grain trucks and a fertiliser buggy and a man in a hooded sweatshirt walking the fence with a phone against his ear.

Merle did not call. That was the part. Not the acres, not the seed, not the ninety dollars in Ashland. Merle did not call, and when you finally came up on him at the counter in the feed store in March he was pleasant about it, said something about how these things go, and asked after your father.

You drove home the long way.

Here is the part a man does not tell anybody. He does not get bitter. Bitterness is loud, and you have never once been loud. What happened went quieter and deeper than that. You got careful. You started taking in promises the way a farmer takes in a forecast, nodding along, discounting as you go, already planning around the version where it does not come. Somebody says they will be there and your ear hears probably. Somebody says they mean it and your ear hears today they do.

And then one Sunday a man up front read out something God said, one of the big ones, one of the ones that ought to have knocked you sideways off the pew, and it came in through the same ear at the same setting. Sixty percent chance. Pleasant. Non binding.

That is what I came about. Not Merle. What Merle taught your ear.

The Handshake That Did Not Hold

What men used to do with their hands and the ground

Long before there was a courthouse, before a signature settled anything, two men who needed an agreement to hold did something physical, outdoors, in front of witnesses.

They took animals, and they divided them, and they laid the halves in two lines with a corridor of bare ground running between. Then the two of them walked it, down the middle, in the open, where everybody standing around the edge could see. What the walk said was not complicated. It said: this is what becomes of me if I do not keep this. Their word was not a warm feeling about the future. It was a thing they staked their own life on, out loud, in a place, with their boots in the dirt.

Nobody there would have called that signing. They called it cutting. A covenant was cut.

Now hold that picture and take in what happened to a man named Abram, out west of nothing, late in the afternoon.

God told him what to bring. Abram brought it, divided it, laid the halves out in the two lines, and then stood there through the heat of the whole day driving birds off, waiting for the other party to arrive so the two of them could make the walk. That is what he was waiting on. That is what the arrangement called for.

Then the sun went down, and God put him to sleep.

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.Genesis 15:17

Abram never walked it. He was flat on the ground in the dark while the fire went down that corridor by itself.

Stop right there, because this one is yours and I want it in your hands before we go any further. You are standing inside an oath that was sworn over you while you had no part whatever in the walking, and you were inside it long before you could have defined the word. That is not a nice idea I am laying over an old story. Genesis 15:17 puts the man asleep and the fire moving alone, and the Holy Spirit is not reading you that scene tonight as history. He is reading it to you as your own footing.

Why the word blood is in it at all

A modern ear hears blood and flinches, and I understand it. But in that corridor the blood was never the point of the thing. It was the seriousness of the thing. It was the way a man said, with no lawyer anywhere and no paper to hide behind, that what he had just spoken could not be taken back.

Blood in a covenant means one thing, and I want you to have it plainly: this cannot be undone.

So when Jesus lifted the cup at that table and said, this is the new covenant in my blood, He was not being poetic and He was not being grim. He was doing the oldest, most binding thing a person could do in front of witnesses, and He was doing the walking Himself, alone, the way the fire did.

And here is the turn on you. Nothing in it has been altered since. You have been treated as a party to an agreement that has never once been amended, and that footing is written rather than felt, and it is His Spirit, not my sentence, carrying it across four thousand years into the chair you sit in.

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.Psalm 89:34

Read the verbs. Not break. Not alter. That is a Man standing at the tailgate saying a price out loud, and then keeping it in a year when keeping it costs Him. The Spirit of God brought you to that line today on purpose, and He is putting your name where the word covenant sits in it.

What Merle taught your ear, and what is retuning it

Here is the mercy in this, and I want to say it carefully, because nobody has any business scolding a man for the calluses he grew honestly. Your caution was not a sin. It was good judgement about men, correctly learned, and then quietly applied to God, who is not a man and never once has been.

You did not decide to do that. Nobody does. An ear that has been burned recalibrates itself without asking permission.

So let the recalibration go the other way now. What God speaks over you is not a forecast, and it does not carry a percentage. It was cut. You have an oath standing under you tonight that no season and no silence has weakened, and I am not the authority for that. Psalm 89:34 is, and the Spirit is the One pressing it past your ear into the part of you that got careful.

The breakthrough

So take your hands out of your pockets, because there is nothing in this for you to sign.

That is the thing that has been sitting wrong with you, and you could not name it: you have been standing at the tailgate waiting to find out what your half of the walk is, so you can start being nervous about whether you will manage it. There is no half. The fire went down that corridor alone while the man it was promised to lay unconscious in the dark, and every promise God has spoken over your life since sits on that same footing.

You are held by an oath you did not have to walk, and it has never once been amended. Scripture says He does not alter the thing gone out of His lips, and the Holy Spirit is settling that into you right now, in the ordinary chair you are sitting in, in the ordinary light.

Not sixty percent. Not pleasant and non binding. Cut.

Declare this over yourself

You do not work up the right to talk like this. It was given to you in Christ, and an ambassador speaks on the standing of the One who sent him, never on his own. What you speak is what God has already sworn; when and how He brings it into your hands is His to decide, and the outcome is His. So say these plainly, in the voice you use for true things.

  1. Handshake in the gravel lot, you taught my ear and you are finished teaching it. What God said over me was cut and not signed, and Scripture says He does not alter the thing that has gone out of His lips. Go on out of my hearing, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that I am easy to break a word to, you have no claim on a man God swore to in the dark. His word is written, His Spirit is making it live in me, and I am held tonight by an oath I never had to walk. Get out.
  3. Lord, You went down that corridor alone while the man You promised lay asleep, and You have not amended one line of it since. Your word stands, Your Spirit is pressing it past my ear right now, and I take You at it in Your name. I start tonight with the one promise I had been reading as weather.
