Praying Words With Nothing Behind Them

This message is for you pray the promises out loud and you have no idea whether anything legal stands behind the words you are saying

The kettle clicks off at five in the morning and Grace does not move for a while. The house is still holding its breath. She has thirty five minutes before anyone else is awake and she has spent them the same way for eleven years: the small lamp over the stove, a mug she never really drinks, and a blue notebook with promises copied into it in her own handwriting, some of them twice.

She reads one out loud, because somebody told her years ago that it helps to hear it. Her voice comes out thinner than she expected. She reads it again, louder, and the second time is worse, because now she can hear herself performing, and underneath the performing sits the question she has never once said to another living person.

Is there anything behind these words, or am I a woman talking to a fridge at five in the morning?

She is not doubting God. That is the part nobody would guess. She would defend Him to anyone in this town and mean every word of it. What she cannot answer is whether the sentence she just spoke has any weight in it. Whether it is a claim or a kindness. Whether it lands on something hard, or goes out into the dark over the rooftops and keeps going.

You know that sound. The sound of your own voice going thin halfway through a good sentence.

So let me take you to a room, because a room is where this actually happened.

It is a borrowed upstairs room in a crowded city, and the meal is nearly over. Low table, cushions, lamps burning oil, a dish of bitter herbs pushed to one side, a jug going round. Thirteen men are reclining and at least two of them have been arguing about which of them counts as the greatest, which tells you what kind of evening it is. Nobody in that room is at their best.

Then one of them lifts a cup.

He does not lift it to drink. He holds it up until every eye at that table has come off its own argument and landed on His hand, and He waits, and then He says a sentence over it that changes what every promise ever made to any of them is made of.

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Nobody wrote anything down. There was no signature, no witness fee, no seal pressed into wax, nothing anybody could take home in a pocket. A cup was lifted, a sentence was spoken over it, and by the customs of every person in that room the thing was now unbreakable, because that is what it meant when blood was named over a cup between parties.

And that, at five in the morning, is what is standing behind the words in your notebook.

Praying Words With Nothing Behind Them

The cup was lifted before anyone understood it

Not one man at that table understood the sentence when it was said. They had walked with Him for three years and they still thought He was talking about supper. Within hours one of them would deny knowing His name to a servant girl in a courtyard, and the rest would run into the dark. The cup was lifted anyway. It was named anyway. Nothing about the strength of the men around that table was load bearing, and that was the whole point of the evening.

You are inside something that was named while the people at the table were still arguing about who mattered most. I am not laying a nice idea over your morning: Luke 22:20 has Jesus calling that cup the new covenant in His blood, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my persuading, who lifts that sentence off an old page and sets it down under your kitchen table this morning.

We have to slow down on the word covenant, because most of us have heard it every week of our believing lives and never once been shown it. It has gone soft in our mouths. It sounds like a warm word for a very sincere promise, the kind of thing a person says when they are moved. It is not that. It never was that.

Cut, not signed

Here is the scene that word comes from, and it is worth seeing before we go a step further.

A man is standing in a field at dusk with a very old ache in him and no children. God has just told him to bring animals, and he has, and he has done the thing everybody in that world knew to do: laid them out in two rows facing each other with a path down the middle, so that two parties could walk that path together and swear an oath they could never take back. Walking between the pieces was the signature. It meant: let what happened to these happen to me if I break my word to you.

The sun goes down. The man waits for God to tell him to walk.

Instead a heaviness falls on him and he goes out cold. Fast asleep in the dirt, in the dark, with the birds circling and the path lying open in front of him. And while he is lying there, a smoking firepot and a blazing torch move down that aisle between the pieces. Alone. Both halves of the oath, walked by One party, while the other party sleeps through the entire thing.

You were included in an oath while you were completely unconscious to the business of it, and that is not a flaw in how it happened, that is how it was designed. Genesis 15:17 is the picture, and the Spirit is not standing over you waiting for you to feel something before the walking counts. It was already walked.

That is why promise is too small a word. A promise is a sentiment offered by someone who means it. This is an oath sworn by Someone who put Himself under the penalty of breaking it, and then walked the path alone so the other party could never be the reason it failed.

So when you open your mouth at five in the morning, you have more than a wish on your tongue. The written word calls this an oath and not a hope, and the same Spirit who was in that upstairs room when the cup went up is the One in your kitchen making an ancient sentence live in the present tense.

What is actually standing behind the words

Let me answer your real question, because it deserves a straight answer and not a warm one.

What stands behind the words you are saying is not your sincerity. It is not the eleven year streak of mornings. It is not how full you felt when you said it or how flat you felt this time. All of that is weather. What stands behind the words is an oath, and the character of the One who swore it, and the fact that He swore it by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by.

Right now, as you read this, you are not talking a reluctant God into anything. You are reading His own sworn word back to Him, and Hebrews 6:17 says He confirmed it with an oath precisely so that we would have strong encouragement, and His Spirit turns that reading of it into standing rather than pleading.

And a covenant has terms, so let us be honest about which side is which. His side is settled: the oath, the cup, the faithfulness, all finished before you were born. Your side is not payment. Your side is response. You come. You agree with what He said. You take what is held out to you and you live like a person who belongs inside the arrangement. That is not a fee. That is what being included looks like from the inside.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and I want you to take it while the kettle is still warm.

You have not been performing prayer at a fridge. You have been standing on an oath that was sworn in a field while a man slept, and sealed over a cup in a borrowed room while His friends argued, and the word confirms both scenes, and the Holy Spirit is not asking your permission to make them real in the place where you are sitting. This is yours. Not offered to you, pending your improvement. Yours.

The thin voice was never the problem. You were never auditioning for a place inside this. You were already inside it, reading out loud from within the very thing you were afraid did not exist.

Declare this over yourself

You do not work up the right to say these out loud. It was given to you in Christ, at a table you never sat at, by a Man who lifted a cup and said what it meant. So say them plainly and leave the outcome with Him, because the oath is settled and the timing is His to decide.

  1. Notebook on my kitchen table, you are not a page of kind sentiments. Every line copied into you was cut and sealed and named over a cup in an upstairs room, and Scripture calls that cup the new covenant in His blood. In the name of Jesus I read you as an oath and never again as longing.
  2. Suspicion that I am talking to myself, you have no claim to stay in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit is the witness who carries that upstairs room into my mouth at five in the morning, and He does not attend an empty conversation. I am heard by the God who swore the thing Himself.
  3. Jesus, You lifted the cup and named it while the men at that table were still arguing, and You are naming me the same way over this mug and this lamp. I am not asking You to make Your word true. I am standing on it out loud while the kettle cools.
