What They Call You At The Gate

This message is for you know exactly what you are called at work and you could not say what you are called by God

Late afternoon at the town gate, and the shade under the arch is the best real estate in the district.

The old men have the stone bench. Everyone else stands, leans, squats, argues, buys, waits for somebody's cart. Nothing gets into this town or out of it without passing through this arch, so the arch is where the town does its knowing. And the knowing at a gate has one shape only. It is what your hands do.

Here comes the rope man. Nobody has said his given name in fourteen years. When his own mother-in-law wants him she sends a boy to fetch the rope man. Behind him is the one who fixes wheels, and behind him the woman who sells the good salt, and after her the man whose sons all left for the coast, which counts as a trade at a gate because it tells you what to say to him.

The gate is not unkind. It is efficient. Two thousand people passing under one arch need short handles, and a trade is a short handle, and it fits.

But watch what happens to a man who has stood under that arch for forty years being handed his own short handle every afternoon. It gets inside. It stops being the thing he does and becomes the thing he is. By sixty he introduces himself with it before anyone asks. By seventy he says it in his sleep. Somewhere in there the handle became the man.

You have your own arch. It might be a lanyard with your surname and a role printed under it. It might be a signature block, or the sentence your relatives use when they explain you to somebody at a wedding, or the two words you say when a stranger asks what you do and you watch their face adjust. Whatever it is, you know it perfectly. You could say it in your sleep, in a second language, under anaesthetic.

Now let somebody stop you in that same doorway and ask a different question. Not what they call you here. What God calls you.

And there it is. The pause. Not because you do not believe. You have believed for years. You simply have never once been handed a word for what you are to Him, and so the space where that word should live has stayed empty while the other one, the small efficient one from the arch, has quietly filled the whole house.

Here is what nobody showed you. There was an afternoon when a man of ninety-nine stood in front of God, and God cut a covenant with him, and right in the middle of it, before the terms were finished, God reached over and changed his name.

What They Call You At The Gate

The name came out of the middle of an oath

Read the scene rather than the doctrine. An old man, face to the ground. God speaking. An oath being sworn, with a sign attached to it and land and descendants named in it. And in the middle of that swearing, this:

No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.Genesis 17:5

Look at what he had at that moment. One tent. One wife past childbearing. No multitude, no nations, not so much as the child the name assumes. If a man had walked out of that tent and gone down to the gate and said the new name out loud, the gate would have laughed at him, and the gate would have had the evidence on its side.

The name did not come from the evidence. The name came out of the covenant. God said what He was making him, and the saying of it was the oath speaking, not a compliment and not a target to grow into.

You have a name of exactly that kind, and you were given it long before you had anything to show for it. That is not my flourish laid over your week: Genesis 17:5 is where the pattern was settled, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying it out of an old tent and speaking it over the room you are standing in now.

Why the gate never had the authority to name you

A gate names by function, and function is real. Rope is real, wheels are real, and there is nothing shameful about being excellent at a thing people need. Work is a gift and the arch is not the enemy.

The trouble is that a gate can only name what it can see, and what it can see is what you produce. So the moment production changes, the name changes with it. Retire and the arch has nothing to call you. Get ill and it gets awkward. Lose the contract, and the handle that carried you for twenty years comes off in your hand.

A covenant name works the other way round. It is given by the One swearing, it rests on His oath, and it is therefore exactly as stable as He is.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.Isaiah 43:1

That is not a wish. It is a statement of ownership by the One who swore, and it is written down so that no mood of yours has a vote on it. You have been called by name, and the Spirit of God is not waiting for you to feel like it before that is true, because a name given in covenant belongs to a person on the day it is given, before anyone believes it, including the person carrying it.

And be clear about which side is which, because that is where discovery goes wrong. God's side is the naming and the oath, and it is finished. Your side is response: you learn the name, you say it, you live out of it instead of out of the handle. Something is asked of you. It is just never the price of the name.

The breakthrough

You are not waiting for a promotion in the kingdom. There is no probation period between believing and belonging, and there never was one. Right now, as you read, the name God has been using for you is the one He swore, not the one printed under your surname on a plastic card.

His word says He calls His own by name and that they are His, and the Holy Spirit is putting that word into you at this moment as your own possession rather than as somebody else's inheritance you are politely admiring. You do not have to feel it for it to hold. Abraham did not feel like the father of a multitude on the walk back to his tent. He was one anyway, because the One who swore had said so.

So the pause at the gate is over. You have an answer now, and it did not come from your performance, your record, your usefulness or your last twelve months. It came out of the middle of an oath.

Declare this over yourself

Speaking like this is not nerve. It is standing: the authority is His authority, not yours, and it belongs to you in Christ the way a name belongs to a child who did not choose it. The Holy Spirit takes the word that is written and makes it live as you say it, and what He does next is His to decide, in His timing, without a single thing riding on your delivery.

  1. Name they call me at the gate, you are accurate and you are far too small. Scripture says the Lord calls His own by name and they belong to Him, so in the name of Jesus you go back to being my trade instead of my identity. I answer to what God swore, and He swore first.
  2. Fear of being only a job, you lose your grip on me today. God gave a man of ninety-nine a name for a multitude he could not yet count, which means His naming has never once waited on the evidence. I am carrying the name that was given, and my hands are not the reason it holds.
  3. Father, You called me by name before there was anything about me worth naming, and You wrote it down so my moods would have no vote. Your Spirit says it over me on the days I cannot hear it and on the days I can. Today I say it back to You out loud, and then I go to work as who I already am.
