Welcomed To TableLuke 22:15

You Set It And Nobody Came

This message is for you set a table for people who did not come and you ate what you cooked on your own

He started on the Thursday, which is the part he does not tell anybody.

Thursday was the shopping. Friday was the slow thing that has to be started early, and the bread, and finding the good cloth in the bottom drawer where it has lived since his mother died. Saturday morning he moved the table out from the wall so six could get round it properly. He put the plates down one at a time. He is not a man who fusses, and he fussed.

The first message came at four, and it was completely reasonable. So was the second one. The third had a small apology in it and an emoji, and the fourth said they would definitely do it soon. The fifth did not come at all, which he understood.

At half past seven he sat down at a table laid for six and ate what he had been cooking since Thursday.

He did not cry. He is not the crying kind. He ate a good meal at a good table in a clean shirt with the radio off, and afterwards he washed six plates, five of which were clean, and put the cloth back in the drawer.

You have done that.

Maybe not with a cloth and six plates. Maybe it was a birthday nobody could make, a room you booked, a Sunday lunch you kept offering until you stopped offering, a chair opposite yours at a kitchen counter that has not had anybody in it since March. Whatever shape it took, you know the specific feeling of having gone to the trouble, and you know what you quietly concluded about yourself while you were washing up. Nobody has to say it. You said it for them.

So let me take you up a set of outside stairs in an old city.

It is a borrowed room over somebody else's house, the kind a family lends out for the week. There are cushions round a low table and lamps, and thirteen men come up out of the noise of the street. The one they follow has walked into that city knowing exactly what is coming for Him inside the next twenty hours.

And He sits down.

And before the bread is broken, before a single word about His body or the cup, before the teaching, before anything, He says this out loud, to their faces, in the room:

With desire I have desired to eat this meal with you.

He does not say it is good to see them. He does not say He hopes it goes well. He tells them how much He has wanted this, and He tells them before He has eaten a mouthful, which is the opposite of the order everyone else uses. Most of us wait to see how the evening goes.

He said the wanting first.

You Set It And Nobody Came

The meal was never the decoration

Here is what everybody in that room understood without being told, and what nobody has ever explained to you.

An oath was not finished when the words stopped. It was finished at a table. The two parties, and their households, sat down and ate, and the eating was the act, not the celebration afterwards. In that world nobody shared a meal with somebody they were still against, so sitting down together in public was the announcement: this is settled, and everybody watching can see it is settled.

Which is why one of the strangest sentences in Scripture is this one, at the foot of a mountain, with seventy elders present.

Also they saw God, and did eat and drink.Exodus 24:11

No fire. No warning. They ate.

And that scene is standing open in front of you tonight, not as a beautiful piece of history but as your own address. You are inside an agreement that was ratified at a table, and the meal was the seal on it. Exodus 24:11 is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is not carrying it across the centuries so that you can be impressed by it.

He said it before He ate

Now go back up the stairs to the borrowed room, because the order of that sentence is the whole thing.

With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.Luke 22:15

He said the wanting before the meal. Before He knew how they would behave, which was badly. Before the argument they were about to have at that very table over which of them was the greatest. Before one of them left and one of them lied about knowing Him.

That is not how invitations work anywhere else in your life, and it is why you keep misreading this one. You have been treating your place at His table as a thing that is reviewed. It is not, and it never was: Luke 22:15 has the desire spoken first, out loud, in advance, and the Spirit is putting that sentence in this room and pointing it at the chair you are in.

The table is not a headcount

And here is where I want to be very careful with you, because this is the point where a message like this usually goes wrong.

Nobody is telling you that if you had more people the ache would be gone, and nobody is telling you the answer is to get yourself somewhere fuller. A table is not a table because of how many are round it. A person eating alone at a counter with the radio off is not eating alone if He is there, and He is there, and He said so before He sat down.

You have not been shut out of a household meal and left to look at it from the pavement. You were seated, on His initiative, at a table where the wanting was announced first. That is written down where anybody can check it, and the Spirit is the one making it present tense over a kitchen tonight.

The breakthrough

So stop reading this as information about an old custom, because the room you are in is the room it is for.

Right now, as you read, there is a place laid for you at a table where the host said out loud how much He wanted you there before anybody had eaten anything. You are not on a waiting list and you were never under review. Luke 22:15 is the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not reciting it at you from a distance; He is pulling the chair out.

The five who did not come were five who did not come. That is a real sorrow and I am not going to talk you out of it. It is simply not the verdict you turned it into, because the seat that was actually settled on you was settled at a different table, by somebody who said the wanting first.

Declare this over yourself

You are not inviting yourself to anything here. The seat belongs to you in Christ, and it was given to you at a table where the wanting was spoken before the meal began rather than earned by being good company. Scripture puts the words in your mouth and the Holy Spirit sets them down in the room, and who else ever comes and when is His to decide, so speak this and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Table laid for six, you are not a verdict on anybody. Five people did not come and One had already said out loud how much He wanted this seat, and Luke 22:15 is where He said it. In the name of Jesus I lay the sixth place for the Guest who accepted.
  2. Story that nobody comes for me, you do not get to sit down here. I was wanted at a meal before the bread was even broken, and Scripture keeps the wanting on His side of the table where I cannot argue it down. I eat tonight as somebody eaten with.
  3. Jesus, You said out loud how much You had desired to eat that meal, and You said it before a single thing had been passed round. You are at this table now, and You did not wait for the room to fill up or for me to become better company. I am saying one sentence over this plate before I start, and then I am eating it with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
